Finally got #KDEConnect working fairly reliably now that I switched from the wireguard vpn app (using mullvad settings) to the actual mullvad app, which is kinder to local network connections.
Pity the mullvad app eats batteries for breakfast.
@juliewebgirl Since you brought up #KDEConnect I thought I'd talk about it while waiting for me tea.
So important thing is that it only works when all the machines are on the same subnet (your home or office WiFi, does not work at Starbucks where they Correctly segment devices...No more packet sniffing).
It defaults to $HOME/Download but you can change it.
I have...

/Download/Bluetooth
/Download/Torrents
/Download/KDEConnect

@juliewebgirl Laptop/Tablet/Phone all know each other #BluetoothAND#KDEConnect and the reason for this is my boxen bight Not be conveniently on the same network.
Caveats I just thought of, if you have a cable and "tether" you're fine. Technically since your phone is your "router" they are on the same network. That works good.
But I'm a lazy fucking SysAdmin so "just work nowwwwww" and cables are faster to be sure but you know my laptop bag...I don't waaaaant to go diggin' in cables.
#KDEConnect between #Android and #iPhone still works fine (not ideal from iPhone but from Android is perfect). between Android and my #Linux PC also is still perfect, both ways. for some reason tho, between my Linux PC and iPhone is not working at all - when i'm pretty sure it used work okay.
I fixed my silly phone.
It's a Pixel 4A 5G, and there's dust under the main camera, which is something I use a decent bit.
I was doing tons of research into alternative OSes (because even de-googled #Android is pretty BLEH), and was considering getting a #PinePhone (not Pro) for #PostmarketOS & #SXMO, or getting a Pixel 3a XL for #UBports.
Man, I just want to be able to ssh into my phone and send texts. I love the idea of #KDEConnect, but I can never get it to work. It just chokes on my 800MB SMS database ;)
#KDEConnect is awesome! I was playing music on my desktop computer and my phone rings. KDE Connect automatically mutes the music when I answer the phone! When I finish the call and hang up, the music automatically starts playing again!
@RL_Dane I use #KDEConnect to integrate with my #Fedora stuff and I archive my text messages to my #Nextcloud through a nextcloud app. Admittedly, I also use Google Voice, which is a doubled edged sword for privacy, but definitely helps leverage multi-device integrations.
Wow, I just tried the gyroscope mouse functionality on #KDEConnect and it's awesome.
I mean, at the end of the day it's just like the presentation plugin, but it's still a great way to handle the TV's computer 🤯 👏
When I could get it to work, it was extremely finicky, and would fail to send a message with no warning, which is GREAT for a messaging-heavy job.
I desperately want it to work, and work well, but it just isn't anywhere close to there, and I don't know how to help without disclosing information that shouldn't be disclosed.
I've only ever used it on Linux, generally on Arch-based distros.
I have many thousands of text messages. My SMS/MMS backups are in the hundreds of megabytes. I think #KDEConnect is just choking on the size of the DB, trying to sync that (or some digest version of it) back and forth.
Last time I used it, I couldn't hardly get it to connect at all, even when I made sure the firewall rules were open for it.
how has no one brought up #kdeconnect as a file transfer method for the #SteamDeck?
it's already preinstalled on the deck
you can transfer from and to phones, Windows and Linux
seems like the most convenient option to copy your roms over lol
Interesting detail: the #SteamDeck comes with a branded seal on the case double zipper. I assume this is so a MITM has to steal the whole thing or nothing. In fact, this prevents physical access to the handheld altogether (without breaking the seal or case). Nice #opsec detail, although I guess it would still be possible to do something by hacking the power adapter, whose box had a simple unbranded seal.
So I got to play the demo game set in the Portal universe, which was nice and quick, and also tested out a bit the Desktop Mode, which was OK-ish, and tried adding a few apps as “non-Steam” games, running which was a rather poor experience (partly because of my choices).
Funny thing, the Desktop Mode comes with #KDEConnect, which is AMAZING, and allowed me to use my smartphone as a keyboard to the #SteamDeck. I love nerding these things out.
