I’m staying in San Jose for a few days for the #NVIDIA#GTC event. The keynote is this afternoon, lots of cool new high performance computing stuff will be announced.
Todays #NVIDIA#GTC announcements included building a GPU chip that’s twice the size of what’s currently possible by joining two max size chips together via a 10 Terabyte/s chiplet interface, adding memory and having 208 billion transistors in the package. Interfacing that Blackwell GPU via 1.8 terabyte/sec interface to 576 other GPUs. For non-techies, these are ludicrously large numbers. Blackwell is named after African American mathematician David Blackwell. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Blackwell
This year's GTC is kinda ass tbh. Like, at least a few years ago when Omniverse debuted, there was a big push to normalize Omniverse and get everyone excited about using .usd with an aside of "and AI could help!" Now Nvidia's all-in, and GTC is now identifying as an "AI Conference"
Are you sure that you want to power your astronomical telescopes with electricity that has such high carbon intensity? #ORM#GTC#CTA#LaPalma#ClimateEmergency
