Big thanks to @aetataureate for putting me onto Primer! First season is covering #CityPop and I’m already loving it. I’m not super deep in the genre so it’s nice to have yet another source to learn of some songs and artists from.
Looking back at the eighties is more fun than actually living through them was. (Thatcher - Reagan era...ugh)
In that spirit, I present "Plastic Love". Even if you don't follow East Asian pop, one listen will take you back to the eighties - and then perhaps to 2017, when an unofficial remix was uploaded to YouTube, becoming viral, and sparking a revival of interest in the city pop sound.
You might remember the thumbnail that went with that YouTube, which has since been taken down.
In fact, the single was not a huge success in Japan when it was released in 1984, although the album reached number one; it's only in retrospect that the song has achieved its status as a musical icon of the eighties.
