Finally managed to get the English subbed episodes for All Men Are Brothers, the 2011 #CDrama version of Water Margin. Unfortunately, Jiang Hu subs didn't finish subbing it so I'd have to watch episodes 37 onwards in raw Mandarin, which, is not ideal thanks to the use of ye olde Mandarin and my level of Mandarin proficiency. US Viewers are lucky. It's on Amazon Prime. I could try a VPN, but it often doesn't work :/
@liztai What you need then is a fan in a country that can get Prime to do a synchronised live stream over Zoom! Pop it on the big screen in a floating window, and glance at it when you need the subtitles. I’m only half kidding here.
@AnnaAnthro@liztai "Love You Seven Times" was also quite nice without exactly being spectacular.
Ding Yuxi is good at playing characters that are fed up on the outside, but turn out to have a heart of gold on the inside. He can go from arrogant to quirky in a heartbeat.
Me, too 😄 There is some behind the scenes the footage where it is clear that he is internally trying to keep it together in the face of her silly behaviour. They are quite cute together in the drama though because of their contrast.
If Esther Yu is reined in, she is OK though. I liked her in "My Journey to You". Actually, she worked for me in "Love between Fairy and Devil" too. But dropped "Romance of the Little Forest" because of her.
Gu Long's novels don't seem to get the same love as Jin Yong's, so there are less TV adaptations to enjoy. Meteor, Butterfly, Sword is a gritty, dark wuxia tale that you rarely see these days. #CDramas#CDrama#Wuxia#TV#Entertainment
Anyone missing some Leslie Cheung? A Chinese Ghost Story is one of my favourite movies in the world, and so is this beautiful song he say.
PS: The movie is based on one of the Tales from "Tales from a Chinese Studio", an ancient compendium of ghost/supernatural stories from the 16th century.
@toridas_ Actually I think the same thing - these days Chinese dramas, especially those idol dramas, have actors whose beauty doesn't seem real. The actors during this time - the 90s were earthy men who were both gorgeous yet really real.
Listening to the song, I realised I forgot what a fantastic singer he was.
Watched the first five episodes. Loving it! The cinematography, the acting, the writing - chef's kiss. Loved Judge Di's origin story. Empress Wu Zetian is appropriately intimidating and regal. If you loved Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, you will really enjoy this.
Just popped in to Bluesky to check the #CDramas and #KDramas feed there and fled quickly, with renewed gratitude for the many here who use spoiler tags liberally. A life saver for me since I don't watch Dramas as they air
@liztai No one using spoiler t warnings. Lots of discussions about currently airing Dramas I have on my PTW list, had to come back here to avoid the spoilers :)
:dancing_panda: Creation of the Gods I is on Netflix! Just in time for Chinese New Year.
This is the xianxia I remember - where the gods care for something beyond romance, but is there to guide and protect humanity. Based on the 16th-century Chinese novel, "Investiture of the Gods".
@liztai@AnnaAnthro Just wanted to thank both of you for sharing such a wonderful, extensive list of CDramas - I've filed them in a note for later! And I'll add @liztai 's blog to my list. Got to find a good blog feed manager....
Just had to share this rare, gorgeous poster of the cdrama Back from the Brink. Since it is the year of the dragon it seems appropriate to share the story of a dragon and his beloved.😁
Watching Cheng Yi as the nerdy judge in Draw the Line and then watching him as the swordsmaster Li Xiang Yi in #MysteriousLotusCasebook will give you massive whiplash, guaranteed. I mean, I totally know this is the whole point of acting, but he just looks. SO. NORMAL. in #DrawTheLine lol.
Anwyay, Cheng Yi is one of the very few actors who does convincing and balletic fight choreography. I love his fight scenes 😍
@liztai Good actors are chameleons without seeming insincere. Cheng Yi is good at making his roles multi-layered. You have seen him as the Asura king, right?
I think they had planned for someone else to play the Asura king, father of Cheng Yi's main role, but he didn't work out. So Cheng Yi played both roles and even voiced this one himself. The deeper voice is close to his actual voice, which you can hear when he sings.
January was a dry TV season, at least for me. But I have a never-ending "plan to watch" list. In this ep, I talk about #KDramas: Vigilante, Perfect Marriage Revenge & Death's Game
and #CDramas: Draw the Line, #ThreeBody & more
Oof the acting is so good in Draw the Line that I winced at episode 17. Our lovable Judge Fang has a massive argument with his wife and when I mean massive, I mean massive! Mean words were thrown at each other. It's like I am watching my parents fight 😬
I like that in this drama we are shown how real these people are. They are by no means superheroes. #Cdrama#CDramas#DrawTheLine#TV#Entertainment
