#boardgame folk: how do you feel about opaqueness - where the outcome of your decisions may not be felt for a long time?
The opening #18xx auctions can be opaque as hell - particularly during early plays. Almost every decision in my own Emu Bay prototype doesn't seem to hit for a while.
@lachlan For a final example, the most-played game at my house is Wingspan, usually between my wife and me.
I try to make a vague strategy out of my first birds. My wife looks at each bird individually and chooses based on whether they have interesting powers, without regard to how they will fit into an overall engine.
Not surprisingly, I win most of our games. From my wife's perspective, it's opaque how my first couple turns set the field for my ultimate win.
@lachlan Wingspan is a fun game and doesn't target the same audience as 18xx. In that case I'd say opaqueness is bad, but there's no way to completely remove it without making the game pointless.
Teaching my wife #ArkhamHorrorLCG using the first scenario of The Night of the Zealot. I'm hoping she will enjoy it enough to play through The Forgotten Age next
@boardgamebreakdown TFA is a rough go for a first real campaign. I would recommend Dunwich Legacy or Path to Carcosa unless you your wife is ok with a tough game.
@cpekruhn Well, I'm fresh off a TFA run and she doesn't really mind a hard game. I think she just enjoys the story. Also, this is only expansion I own and not in a place to buy another right now. But I am looking at getting Carcosa next
Yesterday was my first play of the For The People #boardgame in absolute yonks. Since before I have regularly been tracking my plays of #boardgames back in 2007.
The action took place mostly in the east. The central and western theaters soon became a deadlock. Lee getting killed, as a subordinate general, and Grant taking over the Army of the Potomac really opened up the game in the east.
Good game with clever moves and mistakes on both sides.
Arkham Horror LCG is just so good! I have three more scenarios in #TheForgottenAge campaign and it has just gotten really exciting again. There was a little bit of a lull in the middle scenarios but "The City of Archives" is about to ramp up the #Lovecraftian mythos once again.
I am definitely thinking of grabbing another campaign in the coming months but not sure if I should do #Carcosa or the newest one, "The Feast of Hemlock Vale."

Quick game of #7Wonders Architects with Medals expansion. Love the fact that this game is indeed "quick" - my wife & I completed in 25 min after getting the kids to bed. And I lost by just 2 points! 😥
We played through Act I of a scenario of the #SlayTheSpire#BoardGame. It's a faithful adaptation of the digital game, and plays surprisingly well!
Corri played the Ironclad while I played the Silent. We downed the Act I boss, Hexaghost for us, just as the Ironclad was about to succumb.
My only complaint would be the instructions, which rely a bit too much on knowledge from the digital game. And as players who don't usually sleeve cards, a big "You MUST sleeve" warning would've helped.
