Since I asked the question, I should probably answer it. I actually did this around that time as an 11 year old kid. What I did was I had no clue of what was good or not, so I did a smattering of ANYTHING that was popular at the time to try to figure out my taste in music.
Here are some examples:
Ace of Base - The Sign
Boyz II Men - II
Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
Hootie & the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
Green Day - Dookie
Nirvana - Nevermind
Shaquille O'Neil - Shaq Fu: Da Return
Prior to that, I had only really listened to the radio with my parents. So, only listened to their music. I was 11 by mid-1994 and I wanted to kind of learn my own taste in music. So, this was a perfect chance to do so.
What about you? Even if you weren't alive or were little in 1994, imagine what CDs you would get at that time.
TOM WAITS
Mule Variations
2023 U.S. remastered reissue
180g Furnace pressing
A muddy, earthy masterpiece of epic proportions.
There’s art on here that is SO quintessential Tom; like the bonkers “What’s He Building?” & “Filipino Box Spring Hog”.
I bought this in ‘99 immediately after hearing Big In Japan, & since then, this album has remained on my list of 3 fave Tom albums.
It’s also a go-to for me in the Fall season.
A perfect piece of art. #vinyl#vinylrecords#90s#90smusic#tomwaits
NIRVANA
With The Lights Out
2004 U.S. 3xCD/1xDVD Box Set
One last birthday gift for your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape.
I already “had” this, but it was absolutely unplayable. The audio discs were trashed from years of travel & car play, and from people borrowing it over the years.
A friend of mine spotted a pristine used copy, & thought it would make a good birthday gift for your old pal, here.
First thing I did aftef getting it was fire the old one into the sun. #90s#90smusic#nirvana
THE WONDERS
That Thing You Do! / Dance With Me Tonight
1996 U.S. PROMO 7”
45rpm
I saw somebody recently post that this entire soundtrack was getting a #vinyl reissue soon, and was reminded that I had the 7” single for it somewhere.
I bought this a looong time ago simply because it’s one of my all time favorite movies, and I love Adam Schlesinger.
None of my #45s are registered on Discogs, so once I found it, was shocked to see it goes for over $100 CAD. #vinylrecords#90s#90smusic#90smovies
It's been a very long time since I used my fancy 5 disc autochanger and today marks the day that I start using it again! #Vinyl might be the cooler medium, but CD's are actually my favourite. I collected an amount of rare CD's or albums that are otherwise not available for streaming so that I can rip them and play the music on my phone. This way I also actually own the music, and I won't see it disappearing out of my downloads. (Buggles second album was taken down.)
Deemed a mistake by #PeterHook of #NewOrder, who was the driving force behind Revenge. I don't think of it as such, there's some really good, danceable tracks on here, albeit a bit shallow at times. The sound is dark but the lyrics are sensitive at times. I love the consistent art style they had laid out for their releases, their troop of models called "Revenge girls". Check it out if you like New Order.
This one is manic and paranoid and prone to outbursts and bizarrely joyous all while constantly threatening to collapse into a heap on the floor, something that describes me as I prepare for the beginning of a new semester more than I'd like.
One Eye Open, "Chess Becomes Chinese Checkers" (1995)
I was listening to to #Jodeci "Forever My Lady" album at work last night, and I really need a vinyl repress of that album. Still an absolute classic. Also, I don't want to pay the prices for the original LP XD

SMASHING PUMPKINS
Siamese Dream
1993 U.S. pressing
The ORIGINAL original presses of this were three different coloured 2xLP variants (orange, pink, purple).
Approximately 4000 copies were pressed on BLACK #vinyl in 93, 95, 97, & 04, with 1000 units pressed each time, using the original plates. No repress markers or indicators in the dead wax show any difference.
I bought this in 93, so mine is the first run of black.
Still in flawless shape after all these years. #vinylrecords#90s#90smusic
DADA
Dizz Knee Land / Posters
1993 UK 7” single #45rpm
One of my all time favorite #90s songs!!! The complete album is borderline impossible to find (only ‘92 pressings from Brazil and Spain were pressed), so until somebody comes to their senses and reissues it, this single (along with the one for “Dim”) will have to do.
It’s a great album. Somebody needs to get on that. It’s not like I.R.S. is some super obscure label. #vinyl#vinylrecords#90smusic
And keeping with the theme of mellow efforts from drum 'n' bass producers (although a few years earlier) here's the stunning 'Mind Games' from DJ Crystl. I can never listen to this just once.
And turns out that all these years later, he's offering the wav version on Bandcamp for a limited time:
