Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.
We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.
Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger #DigitalEU.
This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!
@EUCommission
That is good to hear. 🎉
I wonder, is the ec.social-network.europa.eu-Instance then only for the commission and its departments and what happens to the other institutions, that were previously on social-network.europa.eu?
Will there be ep.social-network.europa.eu etc.? And what about other institutions such as @Curia? Will the commission host these as well on ec.social-network.europa.eu or support them in hosting their own instances?

Dear @EDPS - you announced that on 18th of May your Mastodon instance will be shut down. Can you give us all an update on the situation? Have the users on your instance told you if/where they will move their accounts? cc @EU_Commission@Curia
The European Court of Justice @Curia made my day today 🎉
"#Amazon lost a legal bid to delay obeying part of the European Union’s new content moderation law with the European Union’s top court saying its argument was “irrelevant” and “lacking in seriousness.”
Concluding their talk at #37c3 Noémie, Marne and Nono express their shock about latest 🇫🇷 court decisions #8DecemberCase and say that now they are afraid of the future as it might lead to kind of #SuspectByDefault climate.
They point out at @Curia that proofs still as an important ally for protection of privacy and people‘s rights. @LaQuadrature
@spydon In June 2019, @Curia ruled that e-mail services are not telecomunication providers, meaning they cannot be subjected to telecommunication surveillance. Before that, Itzehoe District Court had forced Tutanota to forward certain incoming unencrypted e-mails (directed to inboxes of suspected criminals) to law enforcement. End-to-end encrypted e-mails had not been affected at any point, though.
🧵 European Data Protection Supervisor decision on Cisco Webex: How it started
@Curia asked the EDPS for an authorisation of data transfers that occur in the use of #Cisco#Webex (prior to US adequacy decision of the EC). @EDPS clarifies the scope on page 1 as follows:
"This Decision is NOT a general endorsement nor certification of data protection compliance of the videoconferencing services provided by any Cisco Webex entity."
#Cisco#Webex writes online – as I understand in reference to this decision:
"Cisco’s data protection and privacy policies, standards, and related documentation (“BCR-C”) have been approved by the European data protection supervisory authorities. This approval demonstrates that Cisco’s Data Protection & Privacy program is aligned with EU requirements, including GDPR."
How is going: The @EU_Commission@EC_DIGIT organises on Tuesday their conference on 15 years Open Source Observatory (OSOR). I understand they rely on #Youtube and #Cisco#Webex.
Their privacy notice refers to the Webex marketing page:

Hmm. This AG opinion https://social.network.europa.eu/@Curia/110269999399865525 from @Curia is potentially problematic as it risks being a charter for victim blaming. While I don’t disagree that Controllers need to take responsibilities seriously, it is entirely possible for a Controller to meet a standard of care in their controls but have an accident happen or a processor fail to meet the threshold. Hopefully final decision will clarify this nuance.
@Curia An important part of the AG opinion however is that the harm needs to be more than emotional distress or upset… so there is a lot to unpack and think about here, but it does put a big focus back on managing data supply chain risk one way or the other.
