Cars parking in the bike lane radicalized me 13 years ago, and these days my willingness to "just go around" has hit rock bottom. It feels more important than ever to make it safe for ALL of us to walk and bike.

If this makes you mad, consider:

  1. there is little inherent danger in biking with your kids if it weren't for (big) cars
  2. putting kids in cars is one of the leading causes of death for children, but most people don't question that

@mbonsma I just ride on the sidewalk, but I'm guessing that's frowned upon?

mbonsma,
@mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

@Beeks illegal in Ontario (also hard to mount curbs with a cargo bike)

Beeks,
@Beeks@mstdn.party avatar

@mbonsma illegal?? It's like they want cyclists to die. 🤦🏽‍♂️ (TY for answering!)

mbonsma,
@mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

@Beeks to be clear I understand and support people riding on the sidewalk when they need to for safety! Pedestrians are the top priority though

@mbonsma Can you use an online form to send a photo with the time and location of the incident to the local cops? At least the driver might get a warning out of the bargain.

mbonsma,
@mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

@phil_stevens I don't think that's enforceable here (Ontario, Canada), but that's the idea behind Bike Lane Uprising

@mbonsma I have mused getting a "car horn” as they can never seem to hear my bell for behaviour like this. Not practical in your case with the precious cargo.

It would be nice if having photographic evidence would be enough to get them ticketed. <sighs>

@WTL @mbonsma

You can get an aftermarket moped horn for $50 (US). Has an internal battery, I recharge it about every 3 months. Works well, but don't use it on pedestrians unless they really deserve it (walking 4 abreast in the bike lane).

I'd love to have a truck horn, but it's my ears 2 feet from the horn.

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@artemesia @mbonsma I have looked at those … Might pock one up if I get annoyed enough. 🤣

artemesia,
@artemesia@techhub.social avatar

@WTL @mbonsma

If you do, here's a tip: mount the actuator button on the middle of the brake lever assembly, such that the button is pointing towards your index finger. That way you can activate the horn with the side of your index finger, while still keeping 3 fingers and thumb available for full braking.

@artemesia @mbonsma Great idea.

@WTL @mbonsma maybe a little stamp applicator, dipped in nitric acid, that says "don't park in the bike lane". Some safety concerns though.

@johnefrancis Thermite with a note wrapped around it.

@WTL @mbonsma for dealing with exactly the issue of motorists not hearing my bell, I have been using a bike light with a momentary-maximum button on the handlebar. (A Fenix BC30 light.) It's less useful for signaling to pedestrians or fellow cyclists - my bell works better with them - but for motorists the high-beam flash works very well.

(And there are other options further up the scale of force if you're feeling aggressive, https://mastodon.social/@gnomon/111230137100068919 )

mbonsma,
@mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

@gnomon @WTL this is interesting! I have been loath to get a horn because it feels like joining an arms race (and adds to noise pollution) but I've never considered something like this. Very cool.

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@gnomon @WTL @mbonsma 12000 lumens? Does the bike roll backwards slightly when that is on?

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis @WTL @mbonsma I can only imagine that they measured the beam angle by standing the bike up on a trail, triggering the boost button, then checking which trees had all their leaves burned off

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@gnomon @johnefrancis @mbonsma I was thinking it might burn the paint off the vehicle. 🤔 There are lasers that can do that …

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL @johnefrancis @mbonsma there are indeed, and they are shockingly less expensive than you might expect

https://www.sanwulasers.com/category/striker

(You can also find "laser 303" / "JBL4107" lasers with similar power output levels for about 1/10 the price of the Sanwus, but what you're trading off isn't total power output, it's quality control of the specific spectrum range produced by the emitter. That matters because it's how you buy the goggles that ensure you burn only paint and not your retinas)

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@gnomon @WTL @mbonsma huh ... what's 7.5W in lumens?

I feel like there might be some safety or legal issues with these 😂

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis I have been advised to express my sincere belief that these devices are generally safe as advertised and that any information to the contrary would come as a great surprise.

BrokenFlows,
@BrokenFlows@mastodon.social avatar

@mbonsma if you don’t go around, and there’s definitely a good case not to with precious cargo, how are you handling interactions to clear the way?

mbonsma,
@mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

@BrokenFlows ultimately I go around if I have to, but today I stopped behind the cars and rang my bell. All of them moved!
