@aral@jberg
conservatives are just fascists that manage to not state their worst opinions publicly most of the time.
liberals are bad enough, but not that bad, usually..
@Doomed_Daniel@aral traditionally, in classical liberalism, conservatives were just liberals that wanted stuff to progress slower.
Fascism enters the picture when opportunist elites channel economic discomfort and convince the population to basically perform imperialism inwards.
I believe that if their privilege shields them enough from the initial consequences of fascism. Even liberals that tend to the left might be attracted to some authoritarian leaders.
@jberg@aral
Both historically and currently, actual conservative politicians and parties are much closer and supportive to fascist ones than liberals are.
See for example conservatives getting Hitler into power (because they'd rather coalise with his NSDAP than he moderately left-wing SPD).
Or US Republicans letting fascists take over their party.
Or German CDU already now informally working together with the fascist AfD on a local level
@Doomed_Daniel@aral yeah conservatives definitely are prime targets for fascist takeover. But 1 funny thing to keep in mind is that in the case of trump, lots of his voters had previously voted for Obama. They’ve been flip flopping Democrat and Conservative Party ever since the Regan Administration.
@jberg@aral
I think one needs to differ between people with a conservative/liberal/fascist/whatever stance (incl. politicians) and voters who might not have very deep political convictions and just vote for the other party because the one they voted for last disappointed them.
Of course that braindead two-party system of the US where it's basically impossible for a new party to get any influence makes this especially bad..
