Well, this is a transcendent level of evil: Facebook bought a VPN company and deployed it, in part, to spy on its competitor's users.

https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

It's a reminder that VPNs have their own risks, beyond technical ones if operated incompetently -- namely, that you have to trust the VPN company itself.

UPDATED to reflect which users were being spied on.

tinfoilhat,

@metin @dangillmor do people really think Facebook and TikTok are the same data risk?

toriver, (edited )
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@tinfoilhat @metin @dangillmor judging by their antics around Brexit, various elections etc… Facebook is the bigger data risk. Unless you can point to any elections TikTok has interfered in…

tinfoilhat,

@toriver @metin @dangillmor perhaps you don't understand the authoritarian govt overhead above TikTok?

toriver,
@toriver@mas.to avatar

@tinfoilhat @metin @dangillmor it seems you are not aware that actions (like Facebook’s) speak louder than just ties to the Chinese Communist Party?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@toriver I suspect that too.

Craftycat,
@Craftycat@mastodon.social avatar

@tinfoilhat @metin @dangillmor for most people in the west, and especially in the US, Facebook is a far greater data risk, simply based on their past actions.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@Craftycat @tinfoilhat @toriver @dangillmor The ironic wink of the meme is that Zuckerberg is probably worse than TikTok. 🙂

@dangillmor And abusive and harmful way of doing business is exactly why we should block/defederate Threads/Meta here on Mastodon/Fediverse

kgoldsholl,

@dangillmor but they aren't owned by bytedance, so they are okay

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@kgoldsholl @dangillmor ... and when I talked about TikTok and I pointed out all of these companies are evil, someone argued with me that Meta had to comply with US and EU law. Not sure what rock that person's been living under, but Meta doesn't give a shit about the law unless they're caught.

starluminate,

@Trevorgoodchild to be fair though, most people use instagram anyway and it's essentially the same permissions. It's tough to get out of Meta's grasp

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@starluminate @Trevorgoodchild I did it, and I’m no paragon of willpower.

People just need to be pissed off enough about what Zuck does that the benefits of leaving (FINALLY) outweigh the benefits of staying.

Long before Facebook was a thing, we had effective, robust ways of communicating with others. Those choices, including actually private ones, have only increased.

Family, friends, businesses… ALL can find alternatives to Facebook. Pretty easily.

They just have to want to do it. 🤷‍♂️

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET PEOPLE TO FINALLY LEAVE THIS SITE FOREVER?

considers it

… AND FOR HIM TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND CHARGED TO A DEGREE THAT ACTUALLY AFFECTS HIM NEGATIVELY?

thinks

… AND IS ANYONE EATING THIS BAGEL, BECAUSE I’LL HAVE IT IF IT’S NOT ALREADY SPOKEN FOR.

yacc143,
@yacc143@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor I still cannot find the technical details how Onavo was supposed to get the cleartext of TLS traffic on supposedly secure iOS/Android devices?

They must have used some trick to install a fake CA onto the devices, and that's my friends, not exactly VPN-functionality.

beandad,

@dangillmor The fact that Zuckerberg does things like this tells so much about his personality.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor I've seen quite a lot of claims floated about VPNs. My favorite being that supposedly they'll protect people from viruses. VPNs do precisely diddly squat for viruses. There is a handful of things VPNs are good for and I think most people don't even understand what they are.

jdrch,
@jdrch@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor The only thing a VPN is guaranteed to do is funnel all your traffic to the VPN operator. Nothing else. I've never used one for privacy purposes

QuantumAspect, (edited )
@QuantumAspect@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Exactly what i always say. VPN is not a security measure, because you need to fully trust the VPN company. In that respect it can even be introducing a new vulnerability. Only when you own the VPN server, it can be a security measure.

shannonpersists,
@shannonpersists@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor The main thing about VPNs is that their "no log" policies are vague, arbitrary and definitely include the harvesting of your metadata.

About time that one of these "you are the product" data selling tech cos. adopts the mission statement: "Be evil," rather than advertising just the opposite.

No panacea but I wld like to see a C-suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist in all of these companies (and in many more, as well) — to function independently, much like USG's Inspector General offices. It could help if developed wisely (lots of details to work out.)

ArneBab,
@ArneBab@rollenspiel.social avatar

@dangillmor it’s not that I didn’t warn about this for years. The VPN is only as safe as your trust in the VPN operator — and it creates an absolute single point of failure.

apoc182,

@dangillmor It really is unbelievable.
