VMware's EUC division has been sold off!

@itsfoss Why doesn't Broadcom just cancel all VMWare services, delete all the software, and quit the pretense?

It's honestly starting to feel like someone at Broadcom just had a true deep hatred for VMWare and dedicated their life to ensuring it would die.

@nixCraft It's amazing that people don't get that. Some people have the time and patience to put 100+ hours into a 10 hour game perfecting weapon and dodge combos with only 10 stamina. Some people don't.

I like a good challenge, but key is balance and a lot of stuff is failing to find balance these days. Everything is getting the Dark Souls treatment. Be perfect or die. I don't see how anyone can find that fun because it's basically play only one thing and do nothing else or fail.

The fucking Times. It follows up yesterday's awful poll with another. That they even asked this question is evidence of the bias--the agenda--in their poll. Who made age an "issue"? The credulous Times falling into the right-wing's projection. This is not journalism. Shameful.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@jeffjarvis What shocks me is they never think to just ask the obvious followup: if Biden is too old, given that Trump will be the age he is today before the official time period his reign is supposed to end, won't Trump be also too old to vote in? Especially since Trump is already showing massive mental deterioration...

Even if you take the whole thing at face value, you still just have to throw age out of the equation because it's not really a choice here.

I hypothesize there exists an "Alexa Quine"— a set of syllables or asemic sound-frequency combinations that if spoken/played to an Alexa, will result in the Alexa playing on its speakers a response Q which, if heard by a second Alexa in the same room, will cause the second Alexa to respond with Q, thus causing the first Alexa to repeat Q again, thus placing the two Alexi into a loop

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I kind of want this to be a thing, but maybe even better if somehow it could be possible to put the "AI"'s own mechanisms into a loop. Do they have an actual force-stop after so many iterations or anything like that? (I know image production does, but not sure about other forms of generative "AI.")

Would be funny if you could crash Copilot services or something by asking it to generate a function that generates functions or something.

@nixCraft I always sort of hated it, but what little I do along these lines tends to follow "camelCase" because so many other things start with caps, so I need to do that just to differentiate. I sort of wish it was the other way around and I could use PascalCase or something.

CDC ditches 5-day COVID isolation, argues COVID is becoming flu-like

The agency released a unified "practical" guidance for respiratory viruses.

With the new CDC guidelines, people will wrongly get the idea that if you don't have a fever, you can't spread COVID, which is wrong.

It is very common for people to spread COVID when they don't have symptoms, and they may be contagious for weeks.

The new CDC guidelines force people back to work while contagious and promote dangerous misinformation about COVID that will lead to further mass death https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/01/health/cdc-covid-isolation-recommendations/index.html

Does it really make that much noise though? I don't have dogs. I'm a cat person and when my cats groom they're quiet. But dogs don't really groom, so I don't know what they would be doing in such a case then.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz Yeah, I think people seriously aren't understanding how incredibly dangerous and positively frightening this whole situation is. It isn't just COVID-19 that is getting demoted in everyone's minds. It's everything. The flu already got demoted to "just the flu" even though it kills so many. Measles clearly also did a while back. What's next? Polio?

Another huge problem is businesses also think this means people shouldn't miss work with such diseases and make them come in.

augieray, to random
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

More evidence that repeat #COVID19 infections are dangerous as the virus mutates, and the CDC has decided to loosen guidance.

Public health is dead. It's now popular health--not what people should do, but what they might consider doing. That means it's up to you to protect the health of those you love.

If you get chronically ill, the CDC won't pay your bills, protect your job, or aid you in any way. You face the consequences, not the CDC. Make better decisions, please.

Emulation community expresses defiance in wake of Nintendo’s Yuzu lawsuit

"EmuDev" coders cite precautions, legal differences they say will offer protection.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica I still think the whole thing is performative anyway. They don't have a leg to stand on and there is no way they don't know it. Nintendo and Sony have been fighting these same battles over and over for ages and always with the same result (the only exceptions being things like Bleem which actually had copyrighted code in it. Which is why all emulators since it don't provide that...)

They just want people to be scared of emulators. And it works. And it is absolute crapola.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica The true ultimate irony to companies like these managing to get people too scared to ever use emulators is... the companies literally sell emulation. NES Online, SNES Online, etc etc are things people have to pay to use. But they hide it all behind abstraction layers and people don't see it as being the same thing even though it is.

The problem is, Nintendo can't license (and isn't interested in doing so anyway) everything. Numerous games are unplayable for these people...

@craiggrannell Sony and everyone else does that too. Companies love that. Especially SEGA. I swear like 75% of Sega's business model is selling the same handful of games over and over on every single system. Sometimes twice! There are two licensed Genesis/Megadrive emulators on the Switch...

This upsets me though because any game they can't or won't license never makes it. Can people playing NES online play Faxanadu? No. Is there ANY official way for them to? No. Thanks Nintendo.

nazokiyoubinbou,
@nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Maybe these days. I'm still remembering SONY going nutso back in the day. Taking down Bleem, taking down sellers of modchips, (excuse me, a seller of PSPs with out of region power plugs totally not about the modchips I'm sure!) etc etc.

They're all incredibly hostile towards anything that enables anything other than just sending them money as directly as possible really. They would shoot users for booting systems wrong if they could.

@darth True enough. Though they also have kind of lost exclusivity as a thing too. While each console has a few things that may be exclusive, very very few stay that way. So that's a part of it.

I mean MS and Sony are just packaging embedded PCs with proprietary OSes and tons of DRM and obsessive stuff at this point -- they're not really bringing anything unique to the table -- so frankly I'm not going to feel sorry for them if they struggle. Maybe they'll learn som- yeah, no, lol.

Microsoft is unifying DLSS, FSR, and XeSS into DirectSR. This should mean that the game developer only needs to implement DirectSR, and we should get all three.

nazokiyoubinbou,

@darth And of course it will be a Microsoft exclusive that requires you to buy Windows 12 Gamer Edition for $100 more than Home Edition and install Copilot 2.0, then check the boxes that enable sending personal bank info to Microsoft.

Meanwhile FSR actually is already pretty open (even nVidia is allowed to use it and any game can implement it without needing special licenses.)

DirectSR was definitely was not the answer gamers needed.
