Sometimes a video render for one of my project takes 30+ minutes. On the Mac it’s no big deal, I just work on other stuff or get up from my computer and walk the dog or make lunch.

On the iPad I can’t do anything else, but at least I can leave it to do its thing.

The Vision Pro is weird because if FCP was there, I’d have to leave my computer strapped to my face while it worked. That’s…a weird concept, but at least I can chuck the window behind me while I do other stuff.

@matt Good argument for keeping the Mac as a satellite/connected device rather than running MacOS or its apps as native software on Vision devices, though.

@NateBarham It is, but it's also immediately acknowledging that this isn't going to replace the Mac any more than the iPad did, which kinda makes the whole "is this the future of computers?" question moot.

Related, here's a draft I started a few weeks ago 😛

@matt iPad app management doesn’t really make sense on visionOS where one can open as many windows as they wish (like on the Mac) no?

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@rakyat Not totally sure what you mean 😬 You can totally open effectively as many windows as you want, but everything stops unless you’re wearing the headset.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@matt Do the windows stay where they are if I take off the headset? And are the apps reloaded if I look away for a while?

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@rakyat They do maintain their physical position, but tasks like rendering or uploads die the moment you take the headset off.

@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@matt Not even if the headset is connected to a battery pack/charger? That sounds like a really low hanging fruit waiting to be fixed.

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@rakyat Yeah the way I’d describe it is taking the headset off is like turning the screen off on your iPad – App Store updates can happen and iCloud stuff can do some syncing if plugged in, but that’s it. Agreed it would be awesome for this to get less limiting 😀

@matt For LumaFusion, I just ran it in split screen mode and used another app in the meantime. Same with documents when it was just indexing my Dropbox files. You don’t get the whole screen, but at least you can still do something with it. 😛

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@Abazigal You’re right, it is something, but it’s still pretty brutal in comparison to the Mac 😝

@tchaten@mastodon.world avatar

@matt Yea I did a LumaFusion export the other day in Apple Vision Pro and loved that I could just throw the window behind me while I did other stuff :)

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@tchaten That definitely gives it the edge over the iPad!

See also large file uploads or data transfers…basically anything that takes a while to complete.

Like it makes sense that the headset goes to sleep when you take it off, but it is a weird little shift in how you deal with a computer.

namekkural,
@namekkural@mastodon.social avatar

@matt there should be Handoff for long-running processes. Like when you start that FCP export, your could hand it off to a Mac and that Mac will display the window and keep it alive.

matt,
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

@namekkural heh, that’s an interesting idea. I hear through the grapevine that Apple is working on a way to work seamlessly between FCP projects on an iPad and Mac, so being able to edit in the headset and than export from the Mac would be good for this use case…you know, assuming it worked reliably 🙃
