Viewing this photo on my MacBook Air screen is like magic — the fluorescent green captured absolutely perfectly by my iPhone and it honestly seems to jump right off the P3 screen.

If I open it in Photoshop, the magic is immediately gone (color profiles?). So the question is, will it post to Mastodon with the magic intact?

Let’s find out…

@cabel Grabbing a random sample with Sindre Sorhus's System Color Picker gives me oklch(80% 86% 146deg), and plugging that into oklch.com gives me a color that is apparently outside of P3.

I can only assume the picker is grabbing the actual underlying value of the pixels, and not what the monitor is displaying as a fallback.

@cabel Using @MonaApp on iPhone 13 Pro and I may need eye therapy from how saturated and intense that green is.

@cabel Looks pretty magical to me.

@cabel Yeah I was very frustrated posting small videos here because they look gorgeous on my phone in HDR and when you post them here it gets all dull.

Answer: looks eye popping when I view it with Ice Cubes on my iPhone, but muted when I view it on Mac? Wild!

Magic green

@cabel Is looks very similar to the icloud sharing link to me, in Safari and Ivory?

@renchap @cabel Masto version is SDR, iCloud version is HDR.

I couldn't tell the difference in Safari, only by downloading it to an HDR-capable iPhone

For reference, this iCloud Sharing link seems to have kept the magic! https://www.icloud.com/photos/#070LRPv_oLAbnvspNaBkqdrFw

Nobody cares why am I still posting about this green

@cabel yeah, they look the same on my 4K monitor connected to a Mac Studio ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@cabel This looks the same as the Mastodon version in Safari (both are P3, non-HDR), but if I add it to my photo library and look in the Photos app on my iPhone, it's HDR!

(edit: Pixelmator Pro, which has good HDR support, also shows the iCloud version as being HDR)

@cabel It looks just as bright green here in Mona for iOS on my iPhone 14 Pro as it does in your iCloud link, fwiw.

@JonnyT This is where color management goes to hell — your video’s green not as bright as the original’s green on my monitor! But when I take a screenshot of it, they’re both equal! I hate color management!
