#ClimateDiary more school walk musings. We have these majestic #Holmoaks around here (they are really amazing). At the moment the ground is covered with their dry leaves. They are evergreen and i don’t remember ever seeing this before. In June.Is it the #Drought? But could also have just not noticed this in previous years.
Thinking a lot about #Attention again at the moment and #Phenology - and how it is really hard to monitor continuities and changes, unless they have direct relevance for you
@pvonhellermannn Even evergreens lose a certain number of leaves each year...no leaf is eternal. During droughts though, more may drop and those remaining are often smaller than usual.
@Judeet98 thank you, that makes a lot of sense, and is reassuring- of course trees have a lot survival and resilience strategies.
It was more that i keep on going through this at the moment: worrying about climate change, noticing things that seem worrying, then realising that i simply haven’t been paying enough attention to tree and plants and know so little about their “normal” annual cycles. It’s all really taught me to observe more closely
@pvonhellermannn A layer of dead leaves does another thing for the tree, it stops some of the evaporation from the soil surface too and helps stop the soil becoming baked solid so that any rain that does come can penetrate the soil more easily.
