Disconnect published 100 posts through 2023 and finishes its 11th month at nearly 10,000 subscribers.

In a year of AI hype and a spiraling Elon Musk, it’s no surprise they dominate the top posts of the year.

Let’s review the top 10 of 2023 👇

Elon Musk is obsessed with the letter X, but many people probably didn’t realize he’d already had a company called X long before he rebranded Twitter with the letter.

I unearthed that history back in February.

The Hyperloop is just one of Elon Musk’s ridiculous transport ideas, but after a decade of failure, Hyperloop One went bankrupt.

I felt it necessary to remind people it was never supposed to be built; it was just about hurting high-speed rail plans.

People were gripped with AI this year after the explosion of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. AI CEOs promised us the moon, but it was pretty clear their promises would not be realized.

In July, I explained why we should be skeptical.

Tech companies have been trying to make VR and smart glasses happen for years, so when Apple rolled out their Vision Pro headset, I didn’t want people to fall for the deceptions of their PR machine.

I made the case for ridicule of the Vision Pro in June.

A lot of tech people are obsessed with population and birth rates. When you dig into it, you quickly see the links to much older eugenic ideas and how it’s being used to justify their wealth and power.

In April, I dug into tech’s eugenics revival.

Elon Musk is a man, but he’s also a character, and that character was created and amplified with the help of the media. As Musk abuses his power and wealth, it’s time for a reckoning.

In August, I explained how the media failed us.

I'll never forget the day Elon went to the floor of The Stock Exchange and opened the markets with a 1.5 B bet on Bitcoin.

At the time, Elon was still respected for his bold moves in the Tech space. It was the day after the Superbowl 2021.

It was all downhill from that day.

We’ve heard time and again how generative AI would be great for art and creativity. But the reality is that it just spits out variations on things that already exist.

In September, I used Ursula Le Guin and Joseph Weizenbaum to argue against that future.

Tech billionaires seem to think they’re some of the most persecuted people in the world because they’re no longer being endlessly praised, and they’re turning to faith to keep people on side.

Earlier this month, I broke down the techno-optimism cult.

After a short-lived ouster of Sam Altman from the top job at OpenAI, it seemed to me the real story was not the boardroom drama, but the company’s relationship with Microsoft.

I explored how Microsoft benefits from OpenAI’s aggressive AI push in November.

To end the year, I gave an update on the newsletter’s future. After Substack’s latest controversy, it’s time to move. Disconnect is headed to Ghost in the coming weeks!
