Short version of what people need to know: if you're installing or operating "blacklight" bulbs that don't have an opaque phosphor coating inside the tube, and don't have the characteristic purple-blue color, you're installing a germicidal UV-C lamp that humans should never be exposed to.

fencepost,

@recursive if the tube is clear, that's bad. If there's a pretty cyan glow in the tube, that's bad. If you smell ozone, that's bad. If you put your hand near it, sniff, and smell meat, that's BAD.

@fencepost supposedly the good UV-C tubes have the right glass mix that they won't allow the wavelengths out that break apart O2, but I think the rest would have been true for any UV-C tube from what I'm aware, yep

@recursive @fencepost uvc tubes are usually quartz I guess?

recursive,
@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

@f4grx @fencepost yeah, fused quartz or whatever it's called

@recursive @f4grx @fencepost

Difficult to tell by visual inspection though. Assuming my two UV sterilizer wands are genuine, the bulbs just look like ordinary glass to me.

Whoever installed the lamps for that event should have tested them using UV test strips

@bornach @recursive @f4grx @fencepost There's also UVB tubes that have an opaque white phosphor like standard white fluorescent tubes. I've seen them used in large bug zappers in commercial kitchens. They glow blue, as opposed to the purple of UVA effects lighting tubes.

And Bigclive has just made a follow up video on UVC eye burn in reaction to the Bored Ape incident

Dunk on NFT bros all you like, but this is a safety issue that nobody should be exposed to. It happened before in Hong Kong in 2017, and I hope it isn't becoming more widespread.

@recursive no idea who’s ultimately to blame in this case, but looking at things like lasers that are sold at way higher powers than claimed… i do worry this is going to happen more and more due to seller negligence

Learned about that incident when Bigclive reviewed the incorrectly labelled UV germicidal lamps that were selling on Ebay

The Hypebeast event where the germicidal UV incident occured

After Covid we had the opposite problem. Purple lights were being mislabeled as germicidal UV.

Conditions at concerts (and alike) are bad for you and would be illegal if it was a work environment.

-Likely, you contract a viral disease, possibly with lasting effect
-You are encouraged to damage your brain with alcohol or drugs
-You may get hurt dealing with intoxicated people
-Without protection (not included) you will permanently damage your hearing
-Now, your eyesight is at risk

Your warning is noble but, sadly, noone cares, the selfdestruction is part of the attraction

Who says are worthless? "Attendees at a conference for Bored Ape NFT owners are reporting waking up in the middle of the night following laser and blacklight-heavy performances with extreme eye pain and vision loss. "

@recursive LMAO

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@recursive And to expose people to it, you have to buy the wrong sort of lamp, and ignore all the warnings printed in great big letters, and not employ anyone to do it for you even though they do already know this stuff. But that's fine, because you are Very Smart. After all, you're a cryptocurrency investor!

theothersimo,
@theothersimo@mastodon.social avatar

@RogerBW @recursive wouldn’t it be smarter to make these bulbs not fit a standard socket in the first place?

recursive,
@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

@theothersimo @RogerBW Yeah, it feels like that was a missed opportunity

Betty,

@recursive I mean, it's nice to see big events taking COVID precautions, but also ????

NetHandle,

@recursive now I just want to stick one on a roomba so it can kill germs while it vacuums.

@recursive I hate to say it, but it also feels a little like poetic justice. I just hope the damage isn't permanent!
