#Police Resistance and #Politics Undercut the Authority of Prosecutors Trying to Reform the Justice System
After major American cities began electing prosecutors who campaigned on the promise of systemic reform, law enforcement unions labeled these DAs as soft on #crime while lawmakers made legal and legislative efforts to remove them from office.
Earlier this week, we reported on a homicide detective in St. Louis who refused to testify in multiple cases where he was the lead detective -- even when he knew his lack of cooperation could result in a murder suspect walking free:

@ProPublica The detective clearly didn't join law enforcement to enact justice. He's throwing a tantrum and putting people at risk all because he doesn't like his new elected prosecutor.
Roger Murphey is a pig in the real sense on the word, and a prime example of everything that is WRONG with law enforcement in the US. I'm disgusted with him and every single person that supports him.
We need to bum rush these kinds of assholes out of their jobs. They do not deserve to live in civil society, much less hold a position of authority.
@ProPublica It's the CONTRACT, and the soft, malleable politicians who negotiate it. The contract defines the values that discipline is based on and the weight those values should be given in arbitration proceedings. It's the bottom-up way to begin to change things.
