All media and news outlets that are unsure if it's worth setting up a account because they won't get enough followers: Take a look at Ars Technica (@arstechnica).

Ars established their account fairly recently (Apr 25, 2023) and have quickly gained a large following -- 118K followers!

  • They actively post
  • Their account is verified
  • Their homepage has a link to their Mastodon account

Yes, media, you can be successful on Mastodon.

Ars Technica home page includes a link to their official Mastodon account

I mean. Ars also "just happens" to be really good. I would invite all news outlets to be more like Ars, though I don't know enough about news to know exactly what that means.

InfraredEyes,

@frozencanuck I followed Ars Technica on the bird site for three or four years, but rarely saw their tweets unless I sought them out. I see their posts here regularly. Same with Slashdot. Doesn't that amount to better reach for media than they get over there?

@InfraredEyes @frozencanuck Yeah I never found Twitter good for following news direct from the source, because those tweets don’t get engagement and thus don’t get boosted by the algorithm. So yeah, news sites should get better reach here with the people who follow them (and with those peoples’ followers).

@frozencanuck @arstechnica all true. It's also true that Ars is pretty much perfect for the core Masto demographics but those demographics will be shifting, so not a big concern

I think you just kinda can't be full of shit? And Ars is viewed as basically not full of shit?

Before anyone says "but it's a tech site", @ProPublica is another good example.94K followers. (No link on https://www.propublica.org/atpropublica/ yet though!)

Arguably the @TexasObserver did it “the best way”, including setting up their own instance. They even had a very successful funding drive here.

@oblomov @eloquence My suggestion for any news or media org not yet on Mastodon and wants to get started is to do the following:

  1. Create an account on m.s or m.o. Don't overthink it.
  2. Verify the account
  3. Start posting and keep posting
  4. Let everyone know you're now on Mastodon.

Over time, If the org is feeling more confident, then stand up a dedicated Mastodon server.

Another suggesting: For any article an org publishes, include a link to the author's Mastodon account if they have one
