If this happens, this is a major victory for ActivityPub!

The Vergecast - ActivityPub is the next big thing in social https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vdmVyZ2VjYXN0/episode/MmE3N2Y1Y2MtNDlhZS0xMWVkLWE2ZGMtZjczYTRhNWY5MzEy?ep=14
>Flipboard CEO Mike McCue joins David and Nilay Patel to discuss the potential of #ActivityPub, a new standard for #social networking that is more open, more user-centric, and potentially more powerful than #Twitter and #Facebook. Can ActivityPub save the internet?

I do think it's a victory because in the end, the fediverse will always have the means to not federate with #meta but the fact such big player adopt the protocol is going to bring a furry of other actors to potentially adopt the protocol, it's like "email" being adopted, yes some emails providers are bad but the internet won by having a common protocol for one to one interaction. The same can happen for #activitypub!

kkarhan,

@rmdes nodds in agreement

The problem is when some providers become "too big to ban" and act maliciously.

For example, due to #SPF, basically all #Spammers use #GMail, #YahooMail and #Outlook.com.

#Google, #Yahoo & #Microsoft are notorious for ignoring #abuse reports and not giving any shit, yet instantly & silently block mailservers if they don't setup SPF the way they want it.

@kkarhan totally agree, and this is a big problem with email! I self-host my email on many different domains and it's been a pain in the **** to handle these big sucker-providers and their monopoly.

But that being said, we don't need to let this happen again or indefinitely, the ecosystem knows the danger, it will try to adapt and the execution will be different, anyway it's worth trying!

@rmdes 🤔 Could it be that #ActivityPub might just be (counts on fingers) umm… Web 4.0?

@mori does the number matter?

I think that the potential of the semantic web is yet to be fully exploited, that current "web3" is yet to be executed properly in a way that actually merge a bunch of potentials together and all that without the issues of the web2, so perhaps, everything is yet to be written?

@rmdes Nah, number is fake anyway… more a marketing icon to embed the idea of paradigmatic change in investment pamphlets to attract those sweet sweet speculative dollars.
It’s more of a continual change really, and I you’re probably right- and ActivityPub will help to open things up and do those kinds of things. Like, maybe the comments sections of web articles use activity pub and can be disseminated through the fediverse while also being the comments section of an article.

@mori something #indieweb already does with #webmentions which is very cool!

And in some way @manton is making both accessible via https://micro.blog

I haven't seen a "indieweb" ready theme in available from one-click install but it shouldn't be too hard to use existing Hugo themes to do just that (I'm trying and documenting my progress)

@rmdes @manton Ah that’s neat. I’ll check it out.

@mori @rmdes @manton

We should at least outbid the marketing number of Jack Dorsey with Web 5. Take a significantly high number to be safe for a long time. Not too high that is approaches a googol.

Though maybe Web ∞ is the safest bet, given how fast these things go.

@rmdes @smallcircles @manton spot a nOOb when they say “Web Side Eight” 😉
