My lunch break biking adventure. Checked out the demo of Class IV bicycle lanes ouf town, Thousand Oaks, is planning locally. #BikeTooter #cycling #infrastructure #policy #ThousandOaks #ConejoValley

First note: I have my doubts on the intent of this project, as it is an approved project but the signage says "Proposed". Cc @TOCCNewman #ThousandOaks #BikeTooter

My first comments:

  1. There was, when I arrived, A CAR IN THE TEMPORARY BICYCLE LANE 😬 😱 cc @toccnewman
  2. The demo lanes, and the Class IV project, has a problem at the Lynn Rd. and Hlillcrest Drive intersection -- that part of Lynn/Hillcrest is INCREDIBLY BUSY and right now the mocked up lane peters out right there... so you get stranded and wedged in a dangerous spot trying to either cross Lynn Rd going west, or entering the bicycle lane coming from the west... LOTS of vehicle traffic and ZERO protection.
    (continued).

More comments. 3. The transition from Green to Orange to Red on traffic lights needs to be adjusted to bicycle speeds!!! I got caught in two intersections entering on green and not being able to cross before it turned orange/red and having traffic in lanes! (going uphill... I was not moving fast enough to cross in time on the traffic light. I would have been safer and stopping at the pedestrian walk and hitting the "walk" button).

  1. Interestingly enough, there's an existing extra-wide sidewalk along the side of the mall (private property) which, for a utility cyclist not looking to get squished by cars, could be utilized successfully for traversing this part of town. Fine for those of us plodding along for "run errands", but I don't think the fitness cyclists would be able to use it at their normal speeds... #BikeTooter #ThousandOaks

@ai6yr It could also result in pedestrians getting angry and opposing cycling. Also - since it's on private property, they can claim trespassing.

We have a similar thing here even in Davis. An entire corner where the "sidewalk" is on private property instead of the city either retaining or eminent domaining enough space for a publicly-owned sidewalk.

@meganL Yes, I could see that pedestrians would be against cyclists moving at speed on that sidewalk.

@ai6yr “Approved” implies, it exists and go ahead and use it. Might be confusing.

@Catawu @ai6yr It's both. It's a temporary bike lane along the proposed route to give cyclists a chance to test it out and provide feedback to incorporate in a Fall 2024 proposal to get approval to actually make a bike lane there. This is the Weird Phase of bike lane development.

@ai6yr

Always good to see a new separated bike lane project. I just wish class IV didn't permit that separation to be achieved via those useless pool noodle posts. Actually, they're stiffer than pool noodles so more dangerous--when a 2 ton motor vehicle bends one into you, you're going to go down. #biketooter

@artemesia Yeah, pool noodle design seems to be the favored design, from what I am gathering.
