It's Gemma Files' birthday and she is my favorite of my Unholy Trinity of Cosmic Horror Writers. (The other two are Langan & Barron, btw. I still have to check out Evenson, and Ligotti is great but a tad too depressing 😆)
Give her a birthday gift (and do yourself a huge favor) by picking up ANY of these fantastic, dark books that will linger in your mind and fester.
I borrowed Experimental Film from the library after you mentioned her in a post. That’s a great book and a very unique story. That entire competitive yet underpaid indie film and art ecosystem she describes is fascinating.

That book really hits all of my favorite things - cursed media, film history, and the politics and underbelly of the "art ecosystem," as you aptly put it. Plus, reading that book made me realize I was autistic, I identified so much with the MC & it took me on a deep dive of self-realization. So, yeah, it's a special one for me, and I'm very happy you read and enjoyed it!
I think really good art does this - it sort of us tells us about ourselves, too. I saw her sacrificing her health for her career, and that sense of desperation she felt to claw at that chance of success, and that feeling was very relatable for me. And the matter of juggling care-giving duties hits home for me, and I don’t even have my own family (I’m part of a large and very close family though so I see the trade-offs).
