German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni died #OTD in 1827.

His most important work, for which he is sometimes labeled as the father of acoustics, included research on vibrating plates (the so-known Chladni figures or Chladni patterns) and the calculation of the speed of sound for different gases. He also undertook pioneering work in the study of meteorites and is regarded by some as the father of meteoritics.

Chladni's most famous contribution to the study of acoustics is his experiments with vibrating plates, which led to the discovery of what is now known as Chladni patterns. By sprinkling sand or other fine particles onto a vibrating plate and observing how they arrange themselves into distinct patterns, he demonstrated the relationship between vibrational modes and the resulting nodal patterns. These patterns provide valuable insights into the behavior of sound waves.
