Too much criticism of #Biden's #EV #tariffs ignoring basic facts about #China & #BYD

A reminder about why #Chinese #electric vehicles are so cheap - more than mere "innovation"

  • non-existent labor protections, & no real labor unions in Chinese factories = cheap workforce (unlike unionized Detroit)

  • minimal lacking sourcing standards for raw materials = widespread supply chain #humanrights & #environmental abuses

  • massive subsidies & domestic market protectionism

@redwireless @ncoca “bad things happen in the USA” does not mean that worse things don’t happen in other countries.

@njwatt For some reason, criticism of #China often results in these types of "#whataboutism" responses.

jeremy_list,

@ncoca @njwatt it doesn't seem as bad as it was on the birdsite but yes. (Over there you'd also have people desperately trying to convince you that the ACFTU not only represents all the workers of China but does so effectively)

@jeremy_list @ncoca I’m pretty sure bird site had actual PRC propaganda officers on it, they were so dedicated. My favorite was when they started arguing with me based on the definition of words they were clearly looking up and then using in a very nonstandard way

@njwatt @jeremy_list Definitely was worse there, but sad to see some of it here too.

And of definitely there was paid PRC content on the birdsite. China was a top country as a source of revenue for Twitter before #Musk. I would imagine it's even bigger now.

@ncoca Does Biden say that these are the reasons why EVs and green tech from China is being taxed? Do these problems not exist in other goods from China?

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@adnan They certainly do - the #Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention act prohibits any goods linked to #Xinjiang (#EastTurkestan) https://www.cbp.gov/trade/forced-labor/UFLPA

A lot of goods are implicated - https://c4ads.org/commentary/fault-lines/

In general, tariffs generally aim to protect key domestic industries, like automobiles, from unfair competition.

@ncoca I am under the impression that the MAIN reason for tariffs on China EVs and solar panels and other green tech is to protect US domestic industries.

Alon,
@Alon@mastodon.social avatar

@adnan @ncoca Yeah, it's not just counter-China - EU trade negotiators are annoyed too. (And in what I do, public transportation, the US has long had Buy America provisions prohibiting imports in an industry where most firms are European, Korean, or Japanese.)

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@Alon @adnan Definitely, remember the tariffs against Japanese automakers in the 1980s?

But for all the issues US, #Japan, #Europe, etc, face w/ trade b/t each other, #China is completely different. At the very least, I'd appreciate if those criticizing #Biden's tariff would at least recognize that.

Also lessons have been learned - American solar is growing. Europe, which failed to protect against cheap Chinese #solar imports/dumping (or #forcedlabor) saw its solar industry decimated.
