The Tenderloin in SF is oft-maligned. People are afraid of it, and point to it as proof of many of San Francisco's problems.

To me, my neighborhood welcomes all: including immigrants and homeless people. Almost all of my neighbors are people of color. Its languages are Vietnamese, Teochew, Spanish and Yucatec Maya.

I'm deeply suspicious of anyone who shits on the TL. We also have the best farmers market

Go to the Civic Center farmers market every Wed after 1pm to get deeply discounted veggies. I get enough fresh veggies there to feed my family for less than $30 a month. (And we eat a lot of veggies)

Green Thumb stall has 3 for $5, 7 for $10 deals after 1pm.

This market also has far more Asian vegetables, bulk beans, cheap essentials (lemons, garlic, ginger); and there is an excellent tamales / pupusa stall in the cooked food row across the street. There’s even a good Vietnamese fishmonger

@skinnylatte Heart of the City farmer's market is truly unparalleled in terms of both selection and price when it comes to fruits and veggies.

@bluestocking Maybe only Alemany exceeds, but I rarely get out there

@bluestocking@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte exactly--it's harder to get to, especially via transit. the few times I've been the prices haven't been low enough to make that trek worth it from where I've lived. The quality is still great and there's a lot of variety, but Heart of the City beats it for me.

@bluestocking @skinnylatte The farmers market on Clement Street is also good. Quite a few people travel out to it from Bayview/Excelsior on the 44. You get a lot of people taking the bus to Heart of the City as well. Alemany is just not that accessible, really. I mean, that whole part of the City isn't really. One of my goals is to see about getting farmers markets in every neighborhood. We added new ones in the Outer Sunset and North Beach during the pandemic. There was a brief trial for one out in Bayview, but they couldn't really make a go of it. Getting ones there and in OMI would be the top priorities for me at this point.

@nwchapman @bluestocking @skinnylatte We need one in Upper Haight again.

nwchapman,
@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@mikec415 @bluestocking @skinnylatte It's an interesting question of density. There's the Inner Sunset one... and there used to be the Divisadero/nopa one, but that shut down for reasons that are not clear to me. And Upper Haight / Cole Valley is pretty well served by decent grocery stores.

I'd like one, but if were taking a more general stance, I'd probably plump for a Western Addition one.

@nwchapman @mikec415 @bluestocking Is there no longer at market behind the DMV?

@nwchapman@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte @mikec415 @bluestocking I had thought it stopped operation, but apparently I was wrong
I guess I never go that way on Sundays anymore

(Also I'm much more aware of the ones I'm involved in permitting, for obvious reasons, and when the Divisadero one moved to the DMV lot, it dropped off my radar. I'd actually tried to get it moved to the former Lowell/John Adams yard at one point - a space I'd still like to see something use...)

@skinnylatte this is def my favorite farmers market, I used to go all the time when we lived at 8th and Mission and still go every once in a while.

@skinnylatte in the early 70's I did a brief stint (5 months) as a late night desk clerk at the Willard Hotel in exchange for a room. It was like living in Tom Waites lyrics. I was so green people were mostly very protective. Ended with a murder on one of the upper floors during my shift.

@skinnylatte
Is it me, or do these seem exceptionally grainy for FP4?

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@RealGene I was just thinking the same, and it might actually be Kodak 5222 instead. Confusingly I have both films in unmarked bulk rolls

@RealGene Just checked the film strip. It is FP4! I will blame Rodinal for the grain, then :)

@skinnylatte I just learned there's a neighborhood named Tenderloin in SF, but I know Minolta XD7 with MD 45mm pancake is a great combo.
My XD7 has leaky capacitors, so I'm using X-300s instead, though.
