josschuurmans,

What makes Standard Notes a great Obsidian alternative End-To-End Encrypted Notes App | Standard Notes
https://standardnotes.com/compare/obsidian-alternative

@standardnotes may have a leg up over @obsidian in data security, and its takeover by @protonprivacy attests to that.

Unfortunately, this comparison page does little in the way of convincing me that Standard Notes can match Obsidian's features and usability...

@josschuurmans @standardnotes @obsidian Hi Jos, feel free to share your feedback and we'll pass it along to the team.

josschuurmans,

@protonprivacy @standardnotes @obsidian

Thank you. I would consider switching from #ObsidianMD to #StandardNotes for reasons of #privacy and #DataSecurity, and because Standard Notes and Proton software is #OpenSource. Proton being hosted in Switzerland, in Europe, helps too, although I don't know what that means for Standard Notes, whose servers are currently in the U.S.

However, I was hoping to learn about the cost of switching.

josschuurmans,

Which of Obsidian's features would I have to give up? I use Templater templates, Dataview Queries, Outliner and Tasks, to mention just a few popular plugins from Obsidian's vibrant ecosystem.

Markdown files in an Obsidian vault can be edited by other applications, which improves flexibility and reduces lock-in concerns. I read that Standard Notes is more rigid in this respect.

So my question is: What would I need to give up?

ymstnt,

@josschuurmans @protonprivacy @standardnotes @obsidian Basically everything you listed are missing in Standard Notes. Templater, dataview, outliner. There is a feature request for outline editor, has been open since 2018.

You can export notes from SN, and there is an offline decryptor tool as well, but otherwise they are not available in plain text, which is kinda the point of SN.

I've tried to self-host SN numerous times, but they've also made that slightly difficult and expensive... Shame.

@josschuurmans

The Super note type can help produce outlines and task lists to some degree, though this would also depend on the exact use case or workflow.

For the note format, when you select and export Super notes from the notes list on the app, you can choose to export them as Markdown or HTML.
