During the historic gathering of 3 #UnitedStates presidents last night, pro- #Palestinian protesters interrupted the event. Again, instead of ignoring their protestations, the presidents addressed the concerns.
All 3 men remarked on the #Israel#Hamas#war in #Gaza, reflecting on the difficulty of trying to solve intractable challenges such as #MiddleEast#peace as #POTUS. #Biden said there have been “too many innocent victims, Israeli & Palestinian,” in the conflict.
#Obama said #Biden faces a heart-wrenching crisis that is more complex than many want to acknowledge. “I think people understandably oftentimes want to feel a certain surety in terms of how those decisions are made,” Obama said. “But a president doesn’t have that luxury.”
#Obama addressed a protester when he was interrupted by saying, "You can’t just talk & not listen."
"That’s part of #democracy," he added. "Part of democracy is not just talking. It’s listening. That’s what the other side does, & it is important for us to understand that it is possible to have moral clarity & have deeply held beliefs but still recognize that the world is complicated & it is hard to solve these problems."
That poll, however, had #Trump leading #Biden by 30% points on economic issues.
During Thur's moderated discussion, Colbert asked #Clinton what he would say to voters who do not feel like the #economy is strong. Clinton answered that the 2008 recession & Covid are still affecting voters & that Trump did not sustain #EconomicGrowth spurred by #Obama. Biden & VP #KamalaHarris have methodically "put Humpty Dumpty back together again," Clinton said.
#Clinton mocked #Trump for taking credit for #Democrats’ accomplishments. “I listened to him tell us how terrible the American #economy was all during 2016, & then, by Jan 2017, after the inauguration, it had become wonderful, miraculously, overnight.”
Clinton said the economy started improving under #Obama & then Biden inherited "a mess" left by Trump.
"All of a sudden, Joe Biden comes along & creates roughly twice as many jobs…I believe in keeping score.… He's been good for America."
#Obama said, “Sometimes we forget where we started, & where we are now. You've got record-breaking #job growth. You've got an #unemployment rate that is as low as it has been."
There are "structural problems" that frustrate people, Obama said, incl’g the suppression of #unions. That's something #Biden has specifically battled against, he said.
"If you're working hard, & your #paycheck is getting stretched, beyond the breaking point, & you're worried about rent, & you're concerned about the price of gas, it's understandable," #Obama said.
The thing #Biden & the people who support him need to communicate is: "Who do you think is actually going to look out for you?" Obama said. He made clear he did not think #Trump would meet that test.
American economic pessimism has been bafflingly persistent despite major indicators showing that the economy is actually strong. Unemployment is low, #inflation is significantly down, #wages are up, the stock #market is hitting new all-time highs, & it looks like TheFed might keep the US out of a #recession.
@Nonilex It's heartening, and yet, because they are Democrats, the predominant percentage of those opposing all things Democrat will never know or acknowledge how important this is.
