McKenzie River Trail: Part 2

I tagged the end of the trail this morning. Incredible trail. No one told me I would be hiking on a lava bed at the edge of a beautiful lake. I’m currently in the snow attempting a summit of Sand Mountain to see the views.

Clear Lake. The pretty blue lake shimmers in the sun. A building sits on the far shore with a huge forest behind. Two snow covered mountains in the distance.
Blue Pool. Beautiful pool of turquoise blue water that turns back into the McKenzie River on the far side. Lava rock protects the right side of the pool with tall green trees on the left.
A paved path traverses a lava bed on the edge of a lake. A forest of tall green trees fill the far lake shore. Lava rock with green shrubs cover the immediate shores.

McKenzie River Trail: Part 3

I received word via satellite that Sand Mountain has great views of the surrounding volcanos. Decided to take a last minute 15-mile side trip. First time I’ve climbed a snowy mountain but it wasn’t too hard with micro spikes. Snow was still frozen from overnight. I felt like I was on the top of the world, no one around for miles. It’s amazing we can do this.

Mount Washington (Oregon). Snow covered forest leads to a large rocky mountain peak with snow covering the wide flat face. White cloudy sky.
Mount Jefferson. The snowy volcano peers from behind a couple of smaller mountains. Vast forest of green trees in the foreground. Very light blue sky.
Sand Mountain. A view up a steep snow covered mountain. Tall green trees sporadically stick out of the snow. A fire lookout building sits on the summit. Red sand is hidden below the snow. Blue sky with a bit of white wispy clouds. I climbed this mountain to get amazing views.
