Every few weeks the same thing with Signal for Mac. Same for WhatsApp. Only iMessage gets this right and treats non-phone devices as first-class clients that can actually log in on their own.

xavez,

@gruber hell of a lot easier to use texts.com. Not a native client unfortunately. But it doesn’t seem to have this problem. And you get the added benefit of a clean social inbox 😅

Now, fellow EU web developers: iOS allowing other browsers engines does not mean we get to stop testing in Safari.

If we only support Chrome we’ll end up with another Internet Explorer 6 situation. If you weren’t around in those times, trust me: it was bad. Competition is vital.

Please test in at least Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. You’ll keep the web healthy.

xavez,

@jonikorpi I didn’t dive into the details of browser engines for a while, but isn’t it already pretty bad? Last time I checked Chrome/Blink was already well underway being the new IE.

I really really really like working with people who communicate clearly and with all the necessary context.

I really like working with, apparently, a very small subset of people.

Als er iemand nog M1,6×10 RVS inbusschroeven nodig heeft, nu is het moment. Ik moet er een vervangen en kan er uiteraard enkel online 25 kopen 😂

Anyone done a full migration from 1Password to iCloud Passwords and used it for a while yet? If so, does it feel reliable?

Got a yearly subscription renewal coming up in Feb I’d like to avoid, but I’m suspicious of trusting an Apple web service with something as pivotal as passwords. iCloud Mail has already been a bit shit, which isn’t promising.

    xavez,

@wolfr @jonikorpi I’ve been using iCloud passwords forever. It works flawlessly. It’s like they put the sync A teams on passwords and notes and the other services got the B teams.

Holy 💩. OpenAI's board has removed Sam Altman and replaced him with the CTO.

"Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI."

@carnage4life Holy potatoes. Very strong Steve Jobs at Apple vibes.

@hans @wolfr ik heb dat gevoel meer en meer met short form content platformen…

Maar dood is het daar niet. De laatste dagen vrij veel mensen gemigreerd heb ik de indruk :)

One of the arguments against criticizing the crypto industry was that really smart people believe in it and so who are you to question it?

Really smart people believe in dumb things all the time. Steve Jobs believed you could cure cancer with a vegan diet and it cost him his life.

Doing your own research has gotten a bad rap due to conspiracy theorists but always trust but verify when it comes to expert opinions before investing your time or money.

    xavez,

@carnage4life while I agree that smart people can believe dumb things, the Steve Jobs example is a bad one. Metastasised pancreatic cancer is simply one of the hardest cancers to cure. He got some of the best, cutting-edge treatments in the world and still sadly passed away too soon. A vegan diet didn’t cost him his life. An aggressive cancer did.

“We want to reduce the administrative overhead that comes with subsidies, here’s a survey”

How about… cut most subsidies and keep only the societally relevant ones for the arts and organise a lottery for the acceptable projects?

    xavez,

@wimleers I suppose we can start by counting all Sodexo, Edenred and VLAIO employees and move on from there 😜

I think it's worth talking to real people about how they feel about AI as a counterbalance to the massive PR hype campaign that we mostly see. Hint: it's very negative as evidenced by the comments on my post about Medium's new stance.

    https://medium.com/p/abb5b4589c8

    xavez,

@coachtony good for everyone who wanted that! I was just getting into writing on medium again but I guess it’s back to writing on my own website for now then.

    xavez,

@coachtony I like my writing to contribute to ML models because I strongly believe that it’s a lifting tide that lifts all boats. Even if a small amount of companies will make a lot of money because of it I recognise that my contribution is just a drop in a bucket of statistics. I’m here for sharing what I learn with people or ML models, it’s all the same to me.

I’m also perfectly fine with others disagreeing with that point of view. Don’t want to convince anybody one way or the other.

The more Apple tweaks its image processing pipeline with ML, the more it seems to turn to shit. Peak iPhone picture quality was around iPhone X. XS was a smoothed flat mess. It recovered somewhat in 11 but has been downhill since. Anything other than a closeup of a person looks terrible 9/10 times.

The same goes for autocorrect. Still absolute shit since they started applying ML. Supposed LLM treatment in iOS 17 didn’t improve anything for me. @drahardja @atpfm https://sfba.social/@drahardja/111122240602527300

    xavez,

@stevenodb @drahardja @atpfm interesting. The new autocorrect is definitely an improvement for me on a three-language keyboard setup. Corrects far more reliably what I actually wanted to say.

This FineWoven case is so bad, this may be the year I do the unthinkable (for me at least) and go case-less with my iPhone 15 Pro Max.

I've had $10 cases from Amazon feel more premium than this. 😬

    xavez,

@viticci you’ve also just casually made the number one point of criticism with all this.

Is it better for the environment to have a recycled product that needs to be replaced every few months?

Or is it better for the environment to have a leather case that lasts for years? Probably as long as the phone?

KgCO2E/year is the relevant measure here. Not “every case saves x amount of CO2E”

    xavez, to random

Is it just me, or did fetching Mail become faster on iOS/iPadOS 17 too?

    xavez,

@wimleers since the popular Beta program, I've found that initial releases are far more stable than they used to be. It's quite good! Some quirks but nothing major.

Not looking forward to the macOS upgrade, having to reinstall all my devtools and shell settings tho...

    xavez, to random

The new text tools in iOS 17 are fantastic so far. Especially the predictive keyboard in multiple languages and the text selection and undo autocorrect are those tiny improvements that make a big difference.

What I can’t figure out is: why didn’t they let standby mode work when your iPhone is not charging?

    xavez,

@wimleers I don't see why it would be a problem to have standby mode on battery power. Always-on display works on batter power too, it's just the same thing in landscape mode?

The only reason I can see is that they built an analog clock with a seconds hand that needs a 60fps refresh rate.

But seriously, who uses an analog clock?

    xavez, to random

So I’ve just paid €25 to help spread this petition to fix Slack. That’s how much this new design frustrates me: https://www.change.org/p/petition-for-slack-to-revert-back-to-its-original-design

    xavez,

@wimleers don’t think it’s a client side change. I have several workspaces and some are old design, some are new.

    xavez,

@wimleers yes, it's terrible. Sold to Salesforce and downhill from there. No surprise.
