i grew up alongside one of the largest lakes in canada watching The Beachcombers, and never really knew where our driftwood came from until now. what an incredibly well-written article on the ecological significance of pacific ocean driftwood

Officially self-hosting 🍾
https://frans.today

Got a lot better real-time analytics now with GoAccess and otherwise full self-deployment from gitea.

Hopefully I didn't screw with any configuration 😀

Psst... Also now with Atom feed!

@jalict well done! it looks great. what hardware are you running as a host?

i love visiting rural towns. went for a day trip with my mom just to get out of the city for a few hours.

inevitably, i found big box games at their thrift store 😅

and now i’m doing the most 12 year old thing possible: reading the seawolf manual on the ride home 😂

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ariadne 😂did the same as a kid. always went for the bargain bin in the end!

@ThreeOhFour i guess games are like having kids. when you’ve made five bad games in a row something was bound to turn out good

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour i can’t believe you have Retribution! this was one of my favourite shit titles i played the demo of over and over again as a kid

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour and fwiw, i picked it up purely based on your recommendation years ago, otherwise it would have rotted for eternity on that shelf

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour wow voxels! never imagined seeing that in a sierra title

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour good to know. it’s honestly super weird that it is both (natively) win95 and dos compatible, just like fallout.

after two pretty borked sourdough loaves, i finally got my act together and got the right consistency for a perfect rise.

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@billgoats i’ve been playing with the recipe a bit to get the massive rises i see in our local bakery’s loaves. i’m not there yet, but i’ve learned my lesson with making it too wet

Interactive Game Maps

I’ve been brainstorming a way to create dynamic maps for my “mostly” text adventure game, Adventure!
At first, I tried an algorithm for drawing directed graphs that proved to be too computationally intensive for HyperCard.
I’ve settled for a compromised approach relying on the game designer to handle the 2D layout while automating the rest. In the next version of Adventure! this will be the main user interface. For now, it’s mostly informative.

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ericsedge sorting out digraphs to display well visually turns out to be harder than creating digraphs themselves! i did this work about 10 years ago in Adventure Game Studio and never really came up with a visually satisfying solution

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ericsedge wowsers. i didn't get that far. my intended design was kinda simpler for an acyclic digraph, but it never dealt with overcrowding and nodes with tons of connections very well.

This project is turning two this month. More charitably maybe only 11 months of that have been spent actively developing and even then that is less than 20 hours a week.

Nonetheless it's hard to not beat myself up about what I have to show for two year's work. Especially when considering the mountain remaining.

I kind of felt like I was going fast and it'd be done soon but here we are two years later. So it goes for solo hobby dev it seems.

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@britown solo development is one of the longest marathons i've ever run, no matter how much i promise myself to "scale down" an idea. there's just no easy way of making one person do the work of 3-4 people in anything less than 10X the time.

i feel shitty about this problem every month, and i have no workarounds :)

@paulrickards @kiwa keeping an eye on this thread - i have two original MessagePads exhibiting exactly this kind of behaviour.

@billgoats i've been thinking the same, before the heat comes and the plant bolts from the heat and gets stringy and bitter
