@nyrath I think the recent layoffs at JPL hit Sample Return really hard.

I'm trying to remember old pulp scifi stories containing an old scifi troupe.

The idea was in the story, there existed telepathy and other mental powers. Some people's powers were latent, they had them but could not use them. Often were unaware that they had them.

BUT ... if another telepath tried to read their mind, they could see (internally) how it is done. Suddenly the latent telepath was a full telepath.

Can you remember scifi stories like that?

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@nyrath I don't remember any specific instances.

But I remember talking about this with friends and analogizing it to a hearing person living in a community of deaf people. When they encounter a speaking person, they probably do not understand that spoken language's words, but the tone of voice are still understandable.

@isaackuo @nyrath I totally agree regarding design decisions. Hearing that someone forgot to switch on the lidar has me wondering about their checklists.

swope,

@nyrath @isaackuo right, something along those lines. I want to stop myself before diving into speculation.

Yet an even a greater degree for spaceflight:
“Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.” – Captain Alfred Gilmer Lamplugh

The human brain is powerful when focused, but most of our everyday work suffers from a constant barrage of email.

Email forces our brains to constantly “context shift” which has a heavy cognitive load.

Batching work (and ignoring email for periods of the day) can help.

@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@austinkocher I've got 99 distracting notification sounds, but email ain't one.

Livestream tomorrow (Sunday), 6pm ET/3pm PT. Gonna react to and discuss the “Urbanism YouTube Has a HUGE Problem” video that LOTS of my viewers have been telling me to watch. I’ve only watched a little, so this is going to be a bit of a high wire act!

@nerd4cities somewhat on topic... most of the Los Angeles County supervisors are up for election on 5 March. LA County has more people than 40 states. Of course, housing and transportation are major issues.

The movie industry is going to go ballistic when they see this. The AI is capable of making movie clips in response to simple prompts.

In the sixth slide-show, the seventh clip done in tilt-shift mode was impressive

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@nyrath amazing. But immediately after watching these I saw a regular ad, and I can't tell if it's a real thing or some meaningless AI generated thing.

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@isaackuo @nyrath I agree, and it's also perfectly symmetric in perspective, which generative AIs often get wrong.

I guess my point is that looking at a series of impressive generated videos has created a new doubt in my mind that has be questioning mundane images.

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@tkinias @isaackuo @nyrath now I want to add "covered in excessive greebles" to prompts.

Also, get the "Labs" firmware and the QRcontrol app. Enable GPS Time Sync.

The Scarcity of the Long Term

The chief hurdle in constructing a Death Star is not the energy, materials, or even knowledge needed. It’s the long time needed. A society can change their mind mid-way over centuries, and simply move on. The galaxy is likely strewn with abandoned Half-a-Death Stars.

swope,

@LordHivemindofCeres @nyrath I don't know the artist's intention, but I just saw it as an abandoned technological development, decaying like an ancient ruin.

It reminds me of the Portal and Horizon games.

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@nyrath they write "There’s an ethical dilemma around transmitting a mission into the far future."

However, transmitting the default mission (tradition, status quo, institutions, etc.) is also a choice. The ethical dilemma is inevitable and persistent.

It think the dilemma is familiar to parents who want their children to be prepared with skills and experiences, but also want their children to have many paths to choose from.
