If you are serious about "data" you need to be solid with excel (spreadsheets, google sheet, libreoffice...) I'm 100% serious about this.

Y'know how there's a pattern of behavior where someone says something is bad about the tech industry or community or OSS software or something, and then every single nerd within a 50 square mile radius says WELL ACKTUALLY??

I just realized that if, like, even 10% of them just... Sat down and spent some energy fixing the problem instead of insulting someone for experiencing it, we would've solved all those issues by now

@hazelweakly because excel/sheets/whatever is freaking amazing I (observability) put it in grafana as a datasource for managers etc and then I realized that you can make better charts directly in excel/sheet than in grafana and then I got an excel course in udemy and my CV is now like "distributed databases, blabla, and excel" and I'm totally serious about it

I'm curious who is at the moment really happy with their job based on criteria like "I'm doing something useful", "I'm doing it with the tools I like", "It's aligned with my ethics" and "Really good team actually collaborating"? That's usually my top criteria along with the expectation that I don't earn below the gender pay gap.

didn't we have with usenet pretty much the stack overflow predecessor already... (has even "federation" ;) the subscription idea is pretty good too and it always was interchangeable with email/mailinglists so bunch of UI, different protocol or activity pub support glued in and looots of clients and there we have an stackpubuseoverflowactivityforumnet with a nice topic hierarchy included...

I've tremendously enjoyed potts' "vagabonding" as a book to get inspired by (traveling isn't even my passion) - I wonder if there are other books in a similar vain/spirit/world view - living a life of art or writing or slow tech or repairing things or... must however consider real life of women and none of this "I made millions in stock during dotcom xyz but I assure you bee keeping is for everybody!!" or "I live a life of science!! (because my wife takes care of everything)" bullshit.

as a firm believer that every senior engineer can be onboarded within two weeks and can start working right away I'm creating lists upon lists and example commands how things work so that my new collegue can start right away to actually DO stuff. also 4 nice, juicy upgrades on-hold until he arrives :) now preparing the bug buffet to choose from to get into the ugly stuff :blobcatgiggle:
