Whomever's job it was to come up with the debug activation commands for old Sierra games didn't get paid enough. I enjoy the non-sensical ones (like "rats ass" for KQ3, "suck blue frog" for QFG2, and "pump shark" for SQ3), but the real stand-out is LSL2.

Go on, guess.

It's "praise lord."

DOSBox Staging Basics
Today: IMGMOUNT wildcard support

The IMGMOUNT command allows you to mount disk or CD images, but sometimes you may want to mount multiple images to a single drive, swappable via a keyboard shortcut.

Previously you had to specify the names of the all the image files one by one, even if they have some patterns in common (like DISK1.IMG, DISK2.IMG, DISK3.IMG, etc).

DOSBox Stagings IMGMOUNT command supports wildcards for mounting image files, so that you can just specify a file pattern that matches all the image files that you want to include. For example, the command:

IMGMOUNT a *.img -t floppy

will mount the first image file with the IMG extension in the current directory as drive A:. You can easily swap to the next image using the hotkey CTRL+F4 on the command line or during setup when installing a new game.

Been struggling with writing music and I wonder if I've maybe made a discovery...

I love metal. I listen to a ton of metal. I want to make the songs I'm working on metal.

When writing... through the process the songs become progressively more moody and haunting and less actually metal.

I'm finding that as much as I can do it... it feels inauthentic. It feels far off from my creative center. I rarely like the straight metal tracks I make. I almost feel like the heavy distortion and pounding drums need to be more of an accent than the main feature of my stuff.

Is this just me discovering "my style" or a case of struggling to get out of my comfort zone?

It's not like I haven't been trying for years to do styles out of my comfort zone.

So, now I'm asking... Should I drop the dream (at least for now) of putting together a straightforward metal project and just do what comes naturally?

It's this weird thing where I'm examining what I want to do vs what I think I'd actually be good at.

It's so weird... I don't want to make those songs... But I like them more than the songs I want to make.

@Gwendolyn I don't know if it'll help, but I'm up for providing some drums if you want.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Gwendolyn I could even throw some drums together for you, just random-esque drum tracks, and maybe they can work as inspiration.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Gwendolyn No worries. I'm the same, honestly (except my knowledge of musical theory is lackluster at best). I always think "time to kick things into high gear," then I keep that going for a few bars, and then a fucking piano sneaks its way in. I have no idea how that keeps happening.

Holy shit. Sluicebox just blew the doors to the Sierra kingdom wide open. This is a game-changer for anyone who's ever tried to poke around in or modify old Sierra SCI games.

Just had a moment while cutting grass where I realized what I was actually doing and now I feel really bad for the grass.

@Gwendolyn The smell of a freshly cut lawn is the stench of death. Sweet dreams, my friend!

Did you play The Excavation of Barrow Hill... (edit: sorry! it's called Hob's Barrow! damn you, AGG!)? I haven't yet, but I hear it's really good. So good, in fact, that my mate Adventure Game Geek went to visit some of the real-life locations in the game: https://youtu.be/Jh13nbtcoDw

Today's topic on !adventuregames: What is your favorite adventure game UI?

Let's hear 'em: https://lemm.ee/post/487268

#adventuregames #gamedev #ui

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn "Graphic adventure" but just barely. 😅

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn I could snark some more but the sad truth is the only Legend game I've ever finished is Companions of Xanth. 😅 I will say with uncharacteristic seriousness that Eric the Unready's UI is, at first glance anyway, a bit... overwhelming. :)

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@ThreeOhFour @Tijn Good point, but it's a lot to take in at first glance. I think Phil really perfected the "parser without the inconvenience" thing with Snail Trek. Auto-complete and auto-suggest really go a long way.

Obvs I don't blame Legend for not doing that back in <checks notes> 1993... wait, are you telling me Eric came out the same year as Doom, 7th Guest, and SQ5?!

To new followers and new friends, a quick #introduction is perhaps in order. My old post history is still available at https://helvede.net/@SQHistorian but just briefly:

I am a content creator of some ill repute. I do videos about (mostly) adventure games. I just relaunched my channels on #PeerTube: https://spectra.video/a/sqhistorian/video-channels

I also put out game music on vinyl. My "label" is Two Guys Records: https://twoguysrecords.com / https://twoguysrecords.bandcamp.com

I swear a lot.

I moved instances! My new handle is @sqhistorian (https://dosgame.club/@sqhistorian).

Thanks so much to @Tijn and the @dosgameclub for letting me in. I apologize in advance. 😂

And thanks to @summerb for making it happen. 🙏
