@jacqueline Yeah BTRFS is pretty awesome, I've been using it as my default on everything for a couple of years now, I have snapshots taken at every update and rolling back is always just a reboot away if anything goes wrong.

@ente Wanted to migrate my wife too, she used AndOTP. Couldn't import directly so made a script that converts their JSON to the Ente plaintext, might be useful to others: https://codeberg.org/zerodogg/andotp2plaintext

Was helping a friend with some computer thing today and noticed Brave now has a nice big ad for turbo tax slapped on its start page along with that controversial VPN move they made a whiles back...Advised them its probably time to start moving to @Vivaldi who's business model doesnt require shoving ads in your face or sneaky VPN services into your OS.

Brave was such a cool idea I used to think, but as with pretty much every half decent idea that makes use of "crypto" it went to shit real fast.

@nathan @Vivaldi

Personally I love looking at vivaldi's start page, because as I think you already knew before posting, its completely customizable.

The ad i saw on brave was literally part of the background and not something like a tile you could remove.

My larger point is that brave has been going down hill with their attempts to make money, first it's a VPN, then ads from tubo tax, now they're shoving an AI into it. Vivaldi on the other hand has been constantly improving.

What happened to #screensavers ? I mean yeah in some cases on PC you can still set them up if you really want to, but for the most part we all just collectively moved on, why?

We went from like Flying Toasters and Mazes and all the crazy stuff in XScreensavers to just a "lockscreen" that maybe if you're lucky you can customize the source of your screens static image background and if you want an inspirational quote, so basically like we used to do with our desktop's backgrround since the 90s.

I really don't get the blocking threads thing, surely if they want to harvest data from users they could just setup a not so obvious proxy and federate without being noticed (or without being noticed before they can spin up a new one).

I do get not wanting them to make money off the fediverse, but wouldnt the more effective attack be to interact with threads users and point out that mastodon is just threads without the ads? Why alienate potential new users just because they arent as savvy?

I don't really want to take joy in other people suffering but sometimes its nice to see karma finally catching up with folks.

Well it finally happened to me, I've been expecting this for a while.

Hopefully ublock manages to keep up the game of wack-a-mole but if not it looks like Odysee is the least bad alternative to move to, anyone have other suggestions?

I ordered some parts off amazon for my thinkpad rebuild and I was really surprised to see an estimated delivery of "tomorrow between 9-11am" (it was 10pm when i made the order)... normally i would never expect this fast of a delivery, but here amazon has put it out as what i can expect so i do, untill 11am rolls around and "your shipment was delayed".. okay NBD I expected as much, ETA is now 3pm cool...

Sorry not sorry, but this is what happens when you let these companies sucker you into voting against your own interests for worker protections. If they aren't offering enough before the tip while I'm already paying a 30% "service fee", i'd rather the order get logged in their system as being declined so it actually gets noticed on their bottom line, and I can just do it myself. 2/2

The last season of Star Trek Disco is pretty disappointing TBH.

Entire season based around the plot of one TNG episode that went nowhere.

Adira is basically the anti-wesley crusher... they have all the skills and none of the confidence but instead of telling them to "shut up" they get constant encoragement.

And then there's the whole, making the one off "jellico" type captain #1 after he gets demoted, only to show him not learning from any of it over and over.

My new rule is that a TOTAL "service" fee of no more than 30% a tip is part of the service fee... I'm done with this guilt trip on ME for THEM taking more than 50% of what they charge (on top of up to 30% from what they take from the actual vendors). 1/2

You ever been like, listening to some EDM and you start to smell the scent of fresh cut grass and you realize that buzzing sound you've been hearing wasn't actually part of the song?

Cause that just happened to me.

And It's not even the spyware that most users care about, they opt into that shit all the time... its the ad creep and unwanted UI changes that piss people off, things which, while always possible to "fix" on windows, but its one of the things Linux is known for being able to customize the hell out of your setup and most importantly KEEP IT THAT WAY, even if your disto or window manager decides to change the defaults for new setups they wouldn't dare touch your personal config files.

You know how when hostage negotiators work out deals they're like "hey just let one hostage go okay"... making it opt-in is like one hostage, and windows users are a christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza... but there's no John McClain coming to save the day, you just gotta give up the vault codes and hope they don't kill another one.

Clowning on windows users who are shocked pikachu about it being spyware 15+ years after I first told them linux was better is something I honestly feel entitled to... Like not to be too much of a dick about it, but I was making patches to get photoshop and steam working in wine while being told linux will never be good enough for the average user.

I was doing tech support for Ubuntu in 2010, by that point there was very few "average user" issues that couldn't be solved over a phone call.

While I do welcome with open arms all the dozen or so of people who actually are outraged enough over the AI-CoPilot stuff to switch, unless you actively make an effort to do things like block ads, regularly wipe ALL cookies, and generally avoid posting to social media, you are just self reporting all the the same stuff you're worried about microsoft knowing to a dozen other companies.
