I'd like to help archiving websites.

With the wayback machine you can only save a single web page but not recursively the whole website, right?

What would be the best way to do it locally?

wget does the trick but I haven't figured out how to also download all media with it.

WebHTTrack is weird.

Please tell me I'm wrong, but if the bot infestation on social media gets worse, the platforms will have no other choice but to confirm every users identity with a government ID. Because that's pretty much the only thing you can do, right?

@tg9541 I agree. Since 'western' social media obviously couldn't accept russian and chinese IDs and vice versa, that would further the division of the world into at least two political-technical camps. But I believe that's already happening anyway.

@evan With these polls you get the opinions of a handful of people, specifically the ones that follow and probably think like the poster. Federated or not, they're most likely representative for absolutely nothing. They're a fun little feature, but not more.

This may be a stupid question but why do I have to manually save media that I got via to the gallery? I can see it in the chat even if I'm not connected to the internet, so it's clearly already saved somewhere.

@czhang03 Thanks. I get that it's done for security reasons, but is there a way to skip the sandbox, maybe just for certain contacts? I'm tired of explaining to my relatives for the hundredth time that they have tto download media before they can forward it via whatsapp.

Fun fact: Everybody knows the infamous 'cucumber curvature law', which is often used as a symbol for the rampant regulatory mania of european bureaucracy. Well I did some research and it turns out that the law doesn't even exist.

In short: There once was a law that actually regulated cucumber curvature, but it was reasonable and it wasn't forced on the retailers. In fact they asked for it. The law is long gone, though. No, there never was a law like this for bananas.

I just remembered that announced they won't algorithmically push any posts they consider 'political'. Are they still standing by that? How is it going? Because it sounds like a great idea. I imagine if all social media platforms decided not to push anything political today, the effects on the political landscape would be positive and pretty much instantaneous.

It's interesting to see what impact (AI powered) bots will have in the next few years.

Twitter has been made useless by bots because they allowed it. Youtube comments have been made useless by bots because they can't do much against them. Which network might be next?

@czhang03 I fear that in a few years everybody will have to verify their identity with their ID because there's literally nothing else you can do to filter out the bots :blob_disapproval:

Fun thing I learned today. To normal people "ethernet" sounds like some kind of wireless network. And they will tell you that the wifi isn't working after selecting ethernet in the Windows 11 installer (since they don't know ethernet needs a cable). I can't even blame them, "ethernet" does sound like some kind of radio thing ("in the ether").
