Re: last boost, my wife used to work at Lorong Panggung and as a cafe manager she knew the place intimately (since she needed to source ingredients from the grocery shops and kopitiams and poultry stall and hardware shops). Before the MRT was built though, Kwai Chai Hong was a VERY different place without all the hipster cafes and murals, you wouldn’t want to walk there alone at night & Kwai Chai Hong only became a tourist destination since after the pandemic.

Just thinking about how when I moved to this part of the world, I missed my home food a lot but found new cuisines and ingredients that filled that hole. Like, HK / Cantonese / Toishanese food (the primary Chinese food of SF) is similar to what I crave but not 100% it. Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese food hits different.

Mexican, Salvadoran food has felt more homey in some ways.

When I was a kid, I was very close with a Malay girl living right next door. Her parents told her, you see your Chinese neighbour learned to speak Malay, shouldn’t you also be learning to speak Chinese?

Much much later on, my parents told me that my childhood playmate’s parents were in fact shunned and harassed by the other Malay neighbours for being “too liberal” and “not religious enough”. (They moved after a few years.)

Some things never really changed.

One of a few things that I’m grateful for not having to experience (as much) in JP : crazy confrontational cultists.

Yes, you got the Fuji Mountain guys, Soka Gakkai, Happy Science etc., but the Western imported cultists like the JW & Mormons are surprisingly not very in-your-face.

(This is personal experience, so take that with a grain of salt.)

I really don’t get the hate against refugees or immigrants in general, whether they are Palestinians or Rohingyas. Do people really think that we’re so lacking in resources that we cannot look after more people? From an economic standpoint immigrants are a boost to the nation as well.

Unless you really think that the very people you claim to support are terrible people because they are not from your own race, which some have in fact openly admitted.

This will probably not be remembered by many, but I was there in 2018 when a small but vocal group of ultra racist Malaysian Chinese on FB called themselves 法家 (which shares the name with the ancient Chinese philosophy of legalism but also happens to sound a lot like 法西斯 or fascism) and somehow this group joined forces with the leftist idealists (horseshoe theory, hey!) AND Najib apologists to become the most prominent voice of undi rosak among the Chinese-speaking circles.

I think a part of why film photography is so big in San Francisco and Oakland is, if some of us look at computers for one minute more our brains might combust (since we spend our lives working with computers)

The more advanced I get in my career, the less I want to look at a computer in my free time. Recently found myself in the darkness of a darkroom, smell of chemicals, not even any red safe lights (coz color!) and thinking, whee, away at last
