okay, so what happens is you update your profile. woem.men tells every other server: "hey! ashten updated her profile!"

every server, simultaneously, tries to download the new profile. the profile includes the following:

  1. profile picture
  2. display name
  3. bio
  4. pinned posts

pinned posts is whats killing it.

when a server requests your pinned posts, sharkey has to figure out which posts to send and in which order. to do this, it has to go through every single post you've made to figure out how to order them. and it has to do that once for every pinned post you have. and it has to do that for every request.

so, for me that would be:
19,000 notes x 18 pinned posts x 500 servers = 171 MILLION database lookups

so, when there are hundreds of servers hitting woem.men because i added a period to my bio, it crashes cuz it literally requested it's own DDOS

that also explains why my profile seems to fail to federate sometimes

What Linux People Don't Get About The Rest of Us

It's fairly simple. I don't want to spend my time managing my OS. Finding drivers, and compatibility, and all that: you find that fun and interesting. I find it boring and irritating. When I sit down at my computer I want to do the thing I came there to do, not spend my time convincing my computer to run properly. With Windoze, I generally don't have to do that. It's not perfect at eliminating that stuff, but it's a lot less technical and involved than running a Linux distro.

Yes, I'm sure you're able to do just that. Make room in your brain for the idea that not everyone is capable of that, or wants to be capable of that. While I've no doubt that the sign I've hung out here will draw the Reply Guys like no one's business, you're not going to get me to change my mind. I know what I enjoy doing, and maintaining my OS is not among it.

I built - from scraps - my first PC at 14, in 1980. I'm not indigitate (think illiterate, but for digital stuff). I just don't want to. That's not where I get my entertainment from computers.

I'm very glad you get the enjoyment you do out of Linux. Long may it continue. But make room for the idea that we don't all enjoy computing in the way that you do, and that that is okay.

Or (tl;dr version): Damnit Jim, I'm a linguist not a mechanic!

Hello capitalism my dear enemy. I may require you atm to survive, but do not doubt that I wish I didn’t and wish you didn’t rule this land. You need expelled from the land. Artificial scarcity needs expelled. There is plenty. Stop hoarding and fucking share. The means exists to level the playing field that has been so institutionally unbalanced. It may not be quick, and I don’t know exactly what it’d look like, but it is fucking possible.

Yeah I’m trans, so what? Do I wish I was cis? I mean, yeah. That would fix basically all my dysphoria.

But guess what. I’m unfortunately not, and can’t be. So I’m fucking sculpting this body to be more comfy to me. For me. It’s making ME happier. If that bothers you, take a deep look into yourself and maybe question why someone else’s happiness makes you so upset. Why their existence infuriates you.

Have i surgically changed my body? Hell yeah! Have I changed my dominant hormone mix? Hell yeah!

And guess what? I’ve never been happier in my life and wish I had made these changes sooner ^_^

I’m biohacking my body to be what it should be and that’s kinda badass. I’m doing it despite all the negative shit and *phobias

The queer and trans communities have been the first that felt truely genuinely accepting and welcoming. I grew up in a Christian environment, and their “unconditional love” had the longest “*terms and conditions may apply” ever. The queer community in my experience has largely just accepted me and others without requiring a contract for my soul.

Just some barely structured (at best) ramblings of a happy woman.

@hazelnoot So when using exiftool to compare.
when "keep original image" is checked, metadata is left intact, including GPS cordinates.

When it's not checked(the default) so that the image is converted to webp, all the metadata appears to be stripped
