Is there any reason to implement a dark/light theme switch on a website, when the site just reflects the OS setting?

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@MoritzGiessmann Some dark/light theme choices the authors make are not very good: they are too low or too high in contrast, for example. Sometimes, it’s just a force of habit. Other people prefer dark system UI (it looks pro, you know) but light websites. Website theme switchers are essential until more granular (per-site) theme settings are supported in browsers.

@paul @Una @bramus, I see you started publishing web videos for this year’s I/O. It would be super convenient to organize them into a “Web at Google I/O 2024“ playlist. Speaking here as a podcaster planning to discuss/share the news this weekend :)

I'm in the market for a new CLICKER - my old one, which I bought for SxSW 2007, has finally given up the ghost.

Mac/Keynote. Preferably USB-C.

Any tips? Best/worst?

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@ppk This one’s good, I like the cursor and spotlight feature a lot https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/presenters/spotlight-presentation-remote.910-004654.html

There’s a simpler one with just a laser https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/presenters/r500s-laser-presentation-remote.html

As for the USB-C, you can get a simple A/C adapter, like this one https://amzn.eu/d/0n5cflI

What's a budget decent microphone for use in streaming/recording speech that won't break the bank and is available to order swiftly into Germany?

Thanks!

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw With some years of experience recording and producing podcasts, I’d recommend any dynamic USB microphone that just looks nice to you. This one is my favorite out of the least expensive https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Audio-Technica-2100x-Streaming-Podcast-microphone/dp/B086CTJC3L/ USB means that you won’t need an additional audio interface to connect it to your computer. The dynamic part is also important for better sound in acoustically untreated or just noisy rooms. I’d suggest staying clear of any condenser mics, especially gaming ones with RGB nonsense.

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw I have a bunch of RGB-lit keyboards myself, but I still can’t get over brands putting LEDs into microphones 🙄

There is a cheaper option: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/AUD-AT2005USB/dp/B007JX8O0Y/ It’s the previous generation of the same mic.

Huh.

So does

overflow-wrap: anywhere;

first look for better places to wrap, before breaking up a word or other string otherwise unbroken by usual characters that don't mind jumping to a new line?

It seems like a win-win to just put everywhere?

#css

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw I wonder if there’s a downside to putting body { overflow-wrap: anywhere } along with all the font properties. I just tried it on my website, and it only improved the behavior on smaller screens. But I might be missing something, right?

The fact that can and can’t sound almost the same is a problem.

“I can trust you.”

“I can’t trust you.”

If I managed a team that speaks as an integral part of their job, I would ban can’t and force everyone to say cannot.

Re https://tonsky.me/blog/centering/, is it really worth fixing these things? What do you achieve by spending time and money to fix these details, other than making users slightly less annoyed by your design? Maybe these details are not fixed because they don’t really matter that much. Have you ever stopped using an app because a button or icon was slightly misaligned?

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas I’d compare this personal “perfect accuracy” passion with your “browsing the web with JS turned off” one. You find it important, and you’re ready to go the extra mile for this and try to convince other people, too. While some might find it useless or futile.

Gave up waiting for the hausmeister to make a proper sign for me. So I found a round font and used a laser printer on vinyl paper, and the result looks better than some of the proper ones 😎

CSSence, to random

On this year’s CSS Naked Day, I saw a lot of sites without stylesheets. But also without dark mode. @sarajw's website and my own have been the exception. So I was wondering, maybe it’s time to talk about “the six (or more) levels of dark mode”.
https://cssence.com/2024/six-levels-of-dark-mode/

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@CSSence I’m curious why there is screen and … in the Bisectional example. The default (when you have no prefix) would be all and …, which has the same effect unless you want to hide styles from printers.

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@CSSence I toggled the system dark more and printed a sample page with the default dark mode styles enabled via the color-scheme. I even tried to enable the “background graphics” option. All I got was black text on white paper. It seems like all browsers don’t apply them to print.

pepelsbey,
@pepelsbey@mastodon.social avatar

@CSSence It’s a bummer, though, if you have black paper and white ink, you know 😄

@mozilla

When will you enable full access for developers to the webcodecs API?

I ask because this functionality has been available in chrome for years.

We really need it, because we managed to do live streaming in the browser. Rather than having to use OBS

Sadly it was a chrome browser.

I'd prefer it if we could do it from Firefox.
