Hello #MontereyBay members! Meta/Facebook has plans to join the Fediverse (https://mastodon.social/@fediversereport/110011775459235299). Many instance admins have committed to block any FB-run instances; others feel that federation will lead to growth of non-commercial social media and provide FB users with more choice.

To be honest, I'm conflicted. FB as a company is irresponsible and untrustworthy (https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/09/myanmar-facebooks-systems-promoted-violence-against-rohingya-meta-owes-reparations-new-report/). Their content moderation policies are questionable at best, their business model exploits users.

My first job as an admin is to ensure the safety of my members. I'm listening to BIPOC voices who are expressing strong concerns about FB increasing harassment on Fedi, which is already a problem today (follow #BlackMastodon). "Wait and see" feels risky given the behavior that FB allows on their current platform.

Members, what are your thoughts? Are you concerned or hopeful? Do you want to see content that originates from Facebook?

@LucyKemnitzer Good to hear from you! Your post made me think about Facebook-the-company vs FB-the-users. The former is clearly awful and to be avoided. The latter consists of some awful people, many people who are complacent about their social media provider, and some folks that would jump to Fedi given a chance. I'd love to reach that last group.

Also, this is a tiny instance, and I have no delusions that blocking would make any difference to MetaZuck. 😆

I chased down the true story of the sex-changing frogs, and explained why RFK's belief in it is troubling because it betrays a connection to the fringe right's conspiratorial fears that American masculinity is in crisis.

Excellent Father’s Day today. @Heather drove me to a couple of local breweries that I wanted to try (and hey, how about living in a town that has so many breweries that you haven’t tried them all, eh?), and now we are heading to get Mexican food for dinner. Perfect. Happy #FathersDay to all dads, especially the adoptive dads.

The #Fediverse is frickin' awesome. I saw that @PinkDuck boosted my EuroPi faceplate post to the https://kbin.social/m/cnc magazine. I copy/pasted the magazine URL into my Mastodon search bar, clicked "Follow", and now I get to see posts from that magazine. Ain't interoperability great? #ActivityPub

Swapped bits and milled the smaller holes for the LEDs and the mounting screws. It was a little nerve-wracking to do the third tool switch for the larger holes. What if I lost my zero point? I went for it, and it all worked! Sanded the back and sides; still need to polish the front. All in all, really pleased with the result!
