Ugh. Pocket Git, another long time favorite Android app of mine, has disappeared from the Play Store—without an obvious replacement.

I don’t want to start developing Android apps, but dang, I could really use replacements for these:

• Straightforward git client (explicitly not an IDE)
• Package tracker that supports multiple carriers

I’ll design them if someone else can develop them? 😝

@cassidy dunno if this fits your bill, but someone recently recommended MGit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manichord.mgit&hl=en_US

I’m writing a “database” lib where each entry is a file, to avoid having to load the entire DB for most operations.

I think it might be a good fit for the rewrite of my time tracking app. 🤔

Writing this DB feels illegal. Please let me know why this won’t work. 😆

@ascherbaum probably “record”. Like row in a table.

orsvarn,
@orsvarn@peoplemaking.games avatar

@ascherbaum because I wouldn’t have to load everything to do anything.

  • To read 20 records I could load just those 20 files, that’s fast!
  • If I want to add a record I just add a new file, that’s fast!
  • If I make an edit I just edit a single tiny file, that’s fast!

In my use case I would never need to load more than like 150 records regardless of the size of the DB. I think loading many records would be the largest performance drawback of having one file per record.

My current implementation using one JSON file for the entire DB starts getting slow a few thousand records.

@ascherbaum

  • A directory is a table, a file in it is a record.
  • The name of the file is the primary key.
  • I don't understand what you mean by how I handle it.
  • I did not measure performance, this is still hypothetical as I haven't even built this "database" yet!

Someone suggested I check out SQLite, so I'm experimenting with that now, seems perfect for my use case! :)

Every time I try a new open source project (HUGO, it's like Jekyll but without dependencies), I go through a period where I think seriously about punching a hole in the wall

I just... want to get the Blowfish theme working. Which is listed on their themes page. I want to start with Blowfish's example page, so I have a starting point.

But no. Can't. Nothing works. The documentation exists, but is wrong. <screaming>

EDIT: OMG, huge thanks to @msfjarvis who helped me fix this! YAY! Just made some stupid mistake, somewhere, who the heck knows, but yaaaaaay it's working!

@glassbottommeg @msfjarvis I’m also using Hugo for my website. Made my own theme. I really like it!

I even include the Hugo exe in the git repo for my site. Then I have everything needed right in the repo! I know this is bad practice, but it’s convenient! :)

Yesterday I started tinkering with #NixOS for my web server. Today my website runs on it!

It easier than I thought it would be! I really like it! :D

With #NixOS I feel much less locked into the web host I'm using. I think I could get the same web server setup up and running on another machine within an hour. :D

I wrote a blog post about how I use a Git hook for simple continuous integration for my website: https://orsvarn.com/simple-website-ci/

@amxmln yeah freedom from the big services is super nice! :D

it's very likely that I'm the one missing something. I don't know if it's possible to have both a "server repo" and a "client repo" in the same folder.

Do you know? :)
