A few years ago, I wrote a program in Go that would get the RSS feed out of an Apple Podcasts link. I've been using it the past couple years, but I didn't like dragging around this 4.1 MB executable that's not stored anywhere convenient and I was bored, so ended up rewriting it this morning. Usage is pretty simple. Run it, paste in URL, get shown RSS feed link. https://quinbox.xyz/files/Podfeed.exe

@TheQuinbox Is it still in Go?

When your ancient Synology DS216J gets into a mode where you can't actually shut it down, meanwhile it's running extremely slowly. I ended up hard power cycling it by accident, it wouldn't come up, then I did it on purpose and it did.

This plus the fact that it's running really slowly while the disks are in good health...

Time for a replacement. Ordered a DS224+ just now.

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

The DS224+ arived and was smooth as silk setting up, other than my instance of Resilio Sync which is bricked. But the fact of the matter is, my data is safe and speedy.

@jcsteh Hey man, hope you're well...

Interesting Firefox behavior in 126. Things that formerly exposed to the screen reader as "tabs" are now Links, as things that used to show as "menu items" are now "buttons". Nothing in release notes. Intended behavior?

Hey if Sonos can just up and screw their UI then I can just up and decide to never use them for future speakers. Time to check the resale value of this garbage in case they can't fix the UI accessibility like yesterday.

Nice job, jackass!

Do an update that requires you to unplug a certain device. ...And not realize it's required until well after you start doing that update. And you're nowhere near where you can get hands on said device.

...And the person who can is Bob. Tech ignorent.

Oh, and you forgot to turn on Remote Desktop and Zero Tier.

Hi! My name is Nick and I'm a really idiotic tech! Go ahead and laugh at me!

What does the speech mode on-demand do?

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@Caoimhe Only speaks when you explicitly ask it to. So simple navigation (arrows, tab, progress bars) don't speak. But Say all speaks, Read Current line speaks, things like that.

One problem with my new PC: I'm getting intermittent "connection reset" errors, both in Edge and now in Rust tools like rustup and cargo. They're happening immediately, so it doesn't seem like it could be packet loss. Any ideas? Maybe a Windows 11 bug?

I really didn’t want this as part of the archive of last night’s Digital Domain so it won’t be.

But I figured out a way to compromise. Here’s how last night’s Digital Domain...um...started

Hmm. Mastodon.social seems to be loading for me? Confused.

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@talon It's the same here, just possibly with Linode, Digitalocean, Vultr...I end up paying masto.host, which means OVH, which...Doesn't give me great joy.

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@talon Nothing inherantly wrong. I've just been a customer of their's in the past and I didn't have the most wonderful experience. Not great customer service, which is why I'm not enthused about what might happen if something goes down. Also if Cogent decides it wants to live up to its reputation, OVH no longer peers directly with my ISP like it used to.

Sometimes I come across really cool apps on Mac. Like SoundPaste. Press a button, record system audio, mic, or both, press again and it gets saved and copied to clipboard immediately. Then I think about apps like Audio Hijack and like... yeah Apple and Mac have their issues but this is just really cool. As someone who works with audio a lot, there's just so much cool stuff here. And it's accessible too. I dunno.

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@talon Ultimately, I just use the platforms issue-regardless. If I can get something done well there, I do it where I can do it best.

So QRead now seems to be unregisterable. What else are we using for particularly EPub readers? Bookworm seems to display text to screenreaders a character at a time. Can we read with Calibre? Am I screwed for reading on the PC?

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@Brandon_h I think @TheQuinbox wrote a reader app of some kind. Don't know though.

Update on my hospital situation. I was removed from the ICU at around 6:30 PM Eastern time yesterday, Wednesday, February 28. Still don’t know how long I’m going to be here, but probably one or two more days.

Re that last boost...Sounds like DECtalk 4.99 to me. I hope that means we're going to get some real answers about licencing before the year is out if only so that we as a community can work out what we can and cannot do with it. @BlazieTech

We just bought one of those washing machines where the motor that spins the drum has absolutely no sound. Spinning does, but it's massively quieter than the old machine we had. I've never heard anything quite like it.

I have a funny feeling that a lot of people are going to find out that I'm a bit of a heel who didn't already know. I do have a mildly misanthropic side and I bet it shows tomorrow...

On the Digital Domain, Bob wants to play a game of "would you rather?" though a little bit different than the standard form.

Sent my agent out on a quest to find an audiobook publisher with a #Blind producer on the team or at least running the publisher. Couldn't find one, so we're now pondering over 2 offers. One from Recorded Books and the other, Audible. It's a shame, as I really wanted to support a Blind team but oh well! I like Recorded books production quality better but Audible is offering the better deal, so now it's negotiating time!

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

@weirdwriter ...I have a sighted friend who is a narrator who, IIRC, does her work totally indie and can get her stuf on Audible. I don't remember how you negotiate to have her as a narrator though. This might help:

Switching from 1Password to Bitwarden. The @freedomscientific podcast where Glenn demonstrates it did the trick for me. It's not better than 1Password, but it is simply different...and cheaper, to the point where for me, self-hosting has no appeal, that's how little they charge for Bitwarden cloud. I'd been thinking of asking @simon to record himself using it, but FS did it first. Thanks!

nick,
@nick@hkc.social avatar

If you aren't using a password manager, use one. I really don't care which one. Until we're all using passkeys, an individual website is far more likely to be breached than the specialized cloud services that hold your list of individualized website passwords. @bitwarden costs you nothing if you don't need it to act as a TOTP authenticator, and only $10 per year if you do.

The demo for the Spanish hardware DECtalk was the only one that bothered localizing the singing demonstration. The hardware overloaded during the song, so I rendered it through a software version. I am pasting the text for the song below.

I've just released a new version of my Kill NVDA Remotely programs, making them use an INI file for configuration, no longer show terminal windows, and hopefully fix a bunch of DLL linking errors by turning them into pure C and using Microsoft's C compiler. https://github.com/TheQuinbox/kill-nvda-remotely/releases/download/2.0/kill_nvda_remotely.zip
