Three major private railways in Japan (Keio, Kintetsu and Meitetsu) announced details of their brand new trains, but the most impressive one among them is Keio 2000 series. Is it a cartoon character or something?

@FlockOfCats Trains 🚃

Getting one or two stops back on a train to catch an empty train constitutes fare evasion. Many commuters think it would not be found, but not necessarily true. This is what friends of mine working as station staff told me:

  1. Ask all passengers to alight the train before it reverses

  2. Make sure that all passengers queue up before doors

  3. Do ticket inspection from the end of each queue

  4. Result in penalty fares of 200k to 800k yen in most cases.

networker_365,
@networker_365@famichiki.jp avatar

@FlockOfCats That's right. It might sound a waste of time when using a short-distance commuter train, but getting a seat is essential when taking a train for over an hour (like Shonan-Shinjuku line) on a daily basis.

@TomatoGrilledCheese @gullevek @philknall Well, what I have been saying about this topic is that such an act constitutes fare evasion. Whether being caught by the staff or not is another problem (though it sometimes really happens).

@TomatoGrilledCheese @pippa @gullevek @philknall There are actually quite a few posters and ads on screen above doors. But nobody pays attention 🤣

Narita Airport being quite far from the centre of Tokyo appears to be an anomaly among most airports of major cities around the world. Price per km is also amongst the highest, relative to cost of living in Japan.

Combine that with visitors that don’t do their research, with Americans defaulting to taxis due to the US generally having terrible public transport, you get this…

@FlockOfCats @haruka If you read replies attached to this tweet, you may find a few Americans blaming lack of English signboards at airports and stations in Japan. Looks like they can't read any alphabet written by non-native speakers.

Here’s a cool pic for the train appreciators out there 🤓 This was taken during a rare moment when an NYC train car was empty.

@FlockOfCats It is cool but I prefer a train with seat moquette 😅

The public transport here in Japan is always noisy, but looks like things aren't so different in other places either. I was quite surprised five years ago that it was noisy both inside and outside trains.

@FlockOfCats I haven't tried noise cancelling headphones yet. Maybe worth a try?

"The New Yakumo"
The brand new train entered into service today. Iconic JNR trains are to leave soon. This article describes the history of "Yakumo" with a few photos and old timetables.

@FlockOfCats Indeed, but seems that JR West prioritised comfortability, and it must be beneficial for all passengers.

In 1978, Japanese National Railways introduced roll signs with pictures to limited express trains. It is displayed in the middle of the front end. 381 series "Yakumo" is the last one we can see on mainline today.

There are subtle differences. Which one is your favourite? See ALT for details.
