It's been ten years, so a short story about the "gotofail" bug.

Someone came to me about a catastrophic vulnerability in Apple's TLS implementation.

I shit you not, they'd overheard someone at a bar drunkenly bragging about how they were going to sell it to a FVEY intelligence agency for six figures.

They didn't know exactly what it was, just some vague details and the key point that it allowed use of the real certificate.

This was enough for me to find the bug (yay open source), which would go on to be known as "gotofail", and produce a working exploit in less than a day.

The details were anonymously back channelled to Apple, who released a fix.

@matthew_d_green posted on Twitter about it, concerned by Apple's vague release notes.

I used a burner phone to share the details with him anonymously.

Then everyone forgot about the whole thing because heartbleed.

    @bagder shameless plug: have you ever considered relying on static analyzers (e.g. SonarCloud / SonarLint) to try to detect out-of-bounds memory access, unsafe use of tainted (user-controlled) input and other common causes of security issues and bugs?

    As far as I can tell (I'm in the SonarLint team, not SonarCloud), providing feedback on each PR is one of the core principles of the "clean as you code" approach pushed by Sonar. And I can understand that in some cases, it can generate some unwanted noise 😅.

    If you have the time, I believe our PMs love constructive feedback: most probably, if the curl project has a need for some pull requests not to be analyzed, chances are this need is also shared by other projects.

    Herbig-Haro objects are formed when stellar winds or jets of gas spewing from newborn stars form shock waves colliding with nearby gas and dust at high speeds.

    HH 211, 1,000 ly away, is no more than a few 10,000 years old and has a mass only 8% of the present-day Sun (it will eventually grow into a star like the Sun).

    We wonder why NASA uses the term "supersonic" to describe these ~100 km/s outflows in space.

    @AkaSci "supersonic" in this case is based on an analogy between the observed phenomenon (flows of gas moving very fast compared to the surrounding medium) and the propagation of sound (pressure waves) in denser mediums like air or water: the relative speeds and densities allow to compute a Mach number that predicts flow patterns in a very similar way (in this case, the formation of bow shocks)

    Aujourd'hui j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer quelques un•e•s des élèves à qui je vais tenter d'enseigner la flûte à partir de la semaine prochaine.

    Je suis à la fois excité et horrifié.

    Excité parce que j'ai reçu une éducation musicale dont la qualité ne m'est apparue que récemment et que j'ai une opportunité unique d'en transmettre une partie.

    Mon c'est "Une pratique de la pédagogie de groupe dans l'enseignement instrumental" par Arlette Biget.

    À la fois retour d'expérience et recueil de conseils à destination d'enseignant•e•s en pratique instrumentale, j'y découvre plein de pistes pour animer mes futures sessions de flûte avec 2 ou 3 élèves.

    Rétrospectivement, je réalise que feu mon professeur de flûte en appliquait pas mal dans les séances de musique de chambre, consciemment ou pas.

    Hey le fédivers, je cherche un livre 📚 très particulier : "La pédagogie de groupe dans l'enseignement instrumental", par Arlette Biget - EAN 9791094642221

    Apparemment il n'existe qu'en version papier et il n'est plus édité nulle part. Je suis prêt à payer le prix neuf + frais de port pour mettre la main sur un exemplaire d'occasion.

    Le re-pouet peut faire une différence énorme dans ma première vraie expérience d'enseignement 🥰
