I see a bunch of people talking about testing web sites on less-than-ideal networks. If you're developing/testing on macOS and don't want to take a trip to Antarctica to test, download, "Additional Tools for Xcode..." from the Apple developer site, which contains the Network Link Conditioner pref pane. This will allow you to simulate poor network conditions (like slow, and/or lossy). Don't get caught by surprise: test your sites!

After 14 months of weekly(-ish), hour-long play, my friend and I finished Ultima IV again, after having played through it in the 80’s.

What a lesson in game design, and how these types of games have changed. Some incredibly deep content for a product created in 1985.

We played through on an original C64 with an Ultimate II cart for the disk emulation.

Game controllers, please: sticks at the same height on each side. (I don’t understand the Xbox style of mismatched sticks.)

While Flash was a battery killer and security mess, I still have to say: that was a great era of the internet. Flash was fun. People did cool, surprising things with it. Strongbad! Queer Duck! Hard Drinkin Lincoln! Games! Non-flash sites at the time also generally “just worked” and ads weren’t popping up over everything you were trying to read.

Do I know anyone here that does WordPress consulting/development?

I keep seeing people saying that “zero trust means you trust nothing”. However, when they shorten the phrase, they forget that it’s really “zero trust networking”, and the thing you don’t trust is the network. You can’t be in a position of trusting nothing, otherwise, how do you bootstrap trust? You start out trusting your own endpoint, and verify remote certs for services (and services verifying your endpoint), but don’t allow access just because a device is on a certain network.

Stopped into a Whole Foods yesterday and found this at each register. Add this to the no-way-never-in-hell list.

Anyone writing anything, but especially anything technical or inside industry: your super power is to expand and explain acronyms on first use. If you’re writing something worthwhile, it will hang around and there will always be someone reading it that is new to the concepts. Be kind to those future readers.

Hey retro computing people: I have an Apple 13” color monitor. What’s the best way to drive this with something “modern”, like a RPi? Basically, drive it with a non-retro-Mac.

Here’s a general security/privacy rule for all of your services: don’t sign into anything that acts as a proxy for the real service that you use. Messaging services, email, banking, whatever.

I’m here to write in praise of the Apple Watch “Backtrack” feature. I was able to go on a good hike this past weekend, and used Backtrack to track my route and follow it back. I was safe in either case: I had a trail map as well, but Backtrack is an amazing addition.

I’m probably late to this: I was a hold off on any “wearable” until recently. My main interest is the heart data. I know way too many men that have heart issues right around mid-life. Turns out the other features are useful, too!

Finally picked up Horizon Forbidden West. Only a short bit in and again: wow, what a stellar job. The environment is even more beautiful, gameplay is like HZD but amped up a bit - just really great work. I don’t understand how there’s any debate around games being art or not. (They are, always have been.)

I’ve seen a lot of griping that Apple kept such a strong focus on environmental impact during their event yesterday. On the contrary: it’s really important, and I wish more companies paid attention to this and reported on their actions.
