Thanks to @lauren pointing it out, I'm enjoying "The Andromeda Strain" again, (free on YouTube with ads). It's one of those peak 70s sci-fi films; everyone should watch. Very 70s, but also very hard sci-fi, both in the best ways.

And once you're done watching read: https://theasc.com/articles/the-andromeda-strain-may-1971 which is a great article about all the special care taken to make the movie.

Elon turns / X into a porn platform

I wonder if this will trigger age verification requirements in some states? -L

Because Voyager 1 is so far from Earth, it takes almost 23 hours for a command to reach it at the speed of light, and the same for a response to reach us back, for a total of close to 50 hours.

Which means that interactions with Voyager 1, currently around 15 billion miles away, are still faster than many Microsoft Windows updates.

So I stumbled into this video, and I really was enjoying his presentation style. But all through it I was bugged that he reminded me of someone else -- not in appearance really but voice and related mannerisms especially. Took me a few minutes before the right identity dragged itself out of the slimy goo of my deep brain recesses, but yeah: Fred Willard! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1KKSEevvGw

Noticed a video contest from DJI where they want videos submitted that use "tilt-shift" actions. Except they left a letter out of the latter word. Oops.

Woah.

As a UCLA student I was brought in for a test screening of Alien 3 (they got students all the time), which I thought was terrible, and I haven't watched the sequels since.

This I may watch.

@virtualbri I still can't figure out why Sci-Fi film and TV budgets are no longer permitted to buy light bulbs.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@virtualbri I blame the original Alien for starting the whole dark ride movie trend.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@virtualbri Sure, but even most horror films were typically never that dark. Hell, there were usually well lit so you could see the blood.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@artair @virtualbri I know all this. But you only get away with it once. As time went on more and more of the xenomorph was shown (and I've seen a photo of it sitting offstage reading a magazine, as I recall). But then everyone wanted dark sets for no good reason. With recent incarnations of Star Trek (e.g. Picard) being particular offenders. Yeah, @virtualbri already knows my feelings about this ...

Some new factors added to the Drake Equation are suggesting that the odds of intelligent life that we can communicate with in this Galaxy (keeping in mind the limited time during which such civilizations can actually communicate before one or the other or both collapse) is far lower than originally thought, and the odds that we are currently alone in this category here in the Milky Way are now significantly higher. This pretty well fits in with my thinking on this subject.
