ANNOUNCING the sudden and devastating loss of my partner and friend Neana Lawson. Please read the post I've linked here and feel free to leave any thoughts and memories of her there. Thank you.No words will ever express how much she is loved and missed. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/2VnWebaxjxDMCNCj/?mibextid=WC7FNe

So then: iOS can tell if you've been listening to loud audio for long enough to affect your hearing. However, this will be completely off base if you have any kind of hearing loss. So, Apple, if you feel like adding in small tweaks to current features that will make them more usable to more people, add in a hard of hearing mode that either uses more inclusive measuring threshholds, or that allows us to turn off measuring completely.
Yes, headphone notifications are completely turned off. I am really deaf at the moment post failed right ear grommet insertion and my Bose NC700S are almost maxed out when adjusted to my volume and balance needs. If I listen to anything that's even a little bit quiet, I'm stuck.

I swear. People change instances round here more than some people change their socks!

Something I seem to run into more and more and which makes me irrationally irritated: etcetera (or et cetera). The abbreviation is "etc". I don't know why, but it feels like everyone has started writing "ect". It's obvious if you say it aloud, yet it seems to be an increasingly common mistake. It's like writing "ts" instead of "st" as the abbreviation for "street". The order of letters is right there in the thing you're abbreviating!

ladymunch,

@atfarnum @alexhall People using "sale" and "sell" wrong? I've never come across that one. The other one that I've fallen into before but have come to my senses on is "I could care less" If you could care less, that means you care quite a lot for whatever it is. UNFORTUNATELY, even when I'm reading - audio, Braille, screen reader - I notice all the errors people make when putting sentences together and it really annoys me. Like just get an honest proofreader or something! Sadly I've come to think of bad spelling and grammar as the downside of being able to self-publish your own work.

ladymunch,

@FreakyFwoof @wiljames @atfarnum @alexhall Up here in Nottingham it comes out almost like “axe” so makes me think “might well axe you on the spot if you keep butchering a poor innocent word” lol.

ladymunch,

@FreakyFwoof @tinygirl @alexhall @wiljames @atfarnum you and me are probably thinking about the same thing then :)

Found a FLAC copy of the 1982 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, which I had on 13 CDs in the early 2000's. Some of those CDs were damaged because I played them quite a lot. It's great to have an exact digital duplicate of that. The production really feels ahead of its time; I assumed it was a lot newer until I saw the year as part of the metadata.
Debating on manually editing out all the beginning and end material on each CD and merging it all into an M4B or something. One of the many benefits of lossless is being able to do that without any transcoding.

ladymunch,

@simon wow. I didn't know they wer that old! heard those on tape in the 90s. Do you have the first versions of the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy series by any chance? I don't know where you find your audio, but apparently in later runs they were abridged somewhat ... @maerlynofmiria heads up, you told me about this.

anyone else have to use this Viva Engage thing as a work social media thing for announcements etc. I don't like it and creating content is almost completely inaccessible. This is a huge problem as I am expected to blog but no longer can.

ladymunch,

@bmoore123 I've honestly never heard of it. can you email your content to it in any fashion? could email it to someone to post, or something? it's not ideal, but it would at least be some sort of workaround.

So wait. We just had a talkback update 14.1. I'm on Android 14.0. And I still? Can't use my perfectly good Brailliant Bi40X as my Braille display? What the actual hell, Google!

ladymunch,

@fireborn @sclower @Meepercat OMG not good. I hope you feel better soonest. Shame about the tentacles though, imagine how much braille and signing you could do with those!

ladymunch,

@fireborn @sclower @Meepercat grrr voiceover and wrong conversation syndrome strike again, very embarrassing! Sorry about that!

I wonder why everyone in blindland seems to be getting the 15 Pro Max this year. Or rather, anyone who is getting a new phone seems to be getting the Pro Max. I did because people on Reddit said it felt lighter and nicer in their hands than the previous pro max phones. They were right; I've had it for half a day and it doesn't feel uncomfortable at all. I mostly forget I'm holding a new phone until I think about it.

ladymunch,

@TomGrant91 @talon @simon glad I'm not on my own, I love my 13 mini. I'll upgrade if something utterly awesome comes along that I really want, but for the next few years I'm sticking to this one. It's just the right size for my small hands and Braille Screen Input is a dream.

ladymunch,

@simon @TomGrant91 @talon Agreed. I’ve heard that’s the last mini phone they will make. Sad. :(

ladymunch,

@simon @TomGrant91 @talon Ah ok, I thought I'd heard somewhere that Apple said it was their last one, so I'll keep my ears out in hopes of that noto being the case.

Have any of my blind friends ever changed the keys / switches on a mechanical keyboard before? My new board came with some extras so I'm curious. TIA for any info.

ladymunch, to random

I love how n iPad you can get a list of keyboard shortcuts by holding down the command key. I really wish it worked on iPhone too though.

Just taken the plates through to the kitchen. As always, gravy all down my top. The gravy trail stops here folks!

ladymunch, to random

I'm trying to type from my Brailliant BI20X perkins keyboard and NVDA but it seems to automatically think I'm typing the £ pound sign when I write the letter L at the beginning of a word. Anyone Does anyone know how to make Braille input behave please? TIA.

ladymunch, to random

wow! that's a relief! Just converted my right control key on this lovely mechanical keyboard into my old faithful application key / right-click menu key.

ladymunch, to iOS

The ability to change the default alert sound on iOS is going to be really useful. I'm on the Beta so have already changed mine. The Siri voices being deleted bug is still in fine form however.

ladymunch, to random

Is there any way I can change my Brailliant's thumb key settings with NVDA? Everywhere else I have them set up for lefthanded use(iPhone and onboard Braailliant software) but I can't seem to mirror this on Windows. TIA.

Signed and shared: Petition to make Telegram accessible to VoiceOver users: for all those people who find using Telegram on an iPhone as much of a pain in the bum as I do! ignore the Russian, there is English too: https://chng.it/xh8wgRLC5T

on the positive side we'll eat really well tonight and may even have leftovers, so this makes up for the fuck-uppery.

ladymunch,

@devinprater absolutely, bright sides and silver linings and all that.

ladymunch, to random

carers messed up again, second takeaway in less than a week. FFS. I know they can't help it due to rota issues, people off sick, accidents etc, but this gets really old really bloody quick! I keep threatening to send the office our takeaway receipts.

Interestingly, I see no blind people complaining on social media about the lack of progress in visual prosthesis development (retinal implants, brain implants for restoring vision, no invasive devices on the market);

ladymunch,

@seeingwithsound definitely. don't forget though that people going blind later in life usually don't have the skills to scour the net for news and info etc. so it's all a viscious circle.
