And, if like are implicitly no-AI, because derivative work made by AI would be require the same license to be used.

Thanks to @dimitribouniol and @glacials, we're much closer to the next Cork release! I was finally able to implement the first version of a self-compiled check, which was the only requirement left for the next release.

As promised, both Dimitri and Ben will be getting either a free Cork license or the cash equivalent, as well as a special shoutout in the contributors sections once the feature is fully implemented.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@davidbures @slashtechno it is possible to make FOSS sustainable.

One needs to sell goods or services based on FOSS.

However, monetization of pure software is definitely a hard topic. It requires design of app stores, that would:

  • provide software in a convenient way,
  • at very affordable prices,
  • that is collected after some try-out period,
  • then is reasonably distributed between app store maintenance, application author and application dependencies.
kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@davidbures @slashtechno for example, as an individual, I would opt-in to donate a humble amount of 1€/month (or little more) for each machine I have installed on, and have it distributed between NixOS maintainers and developers of all packages I use.

It is a small and affordable amount for an individual. But, there are thousands of users, and companies could donate more, and this would generate nice monthly income in total.

This is applicable to any distribution, though.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@janl @cjk is centrism bad?

It's as far as possible from both extremes.

Also, the concrete subject matter (founder tied to defense company) of this drama is orthogonal to FOSS values - to bring software (source) to everyone.

I doubt Debian (or any other popular distro) is not used by defense companies. There's just no fuzz about it.

A welcome move indeed; will it pan out in the end?

https://news.itsfoss.com/german-state-ditches-microsoft/

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@itsfoss the biggest pain are proprietary formats,...

I don't mind using proprietary software as long as it's fully compatible with open-source software:

  • produced data are in (file) format, that can be used without issues with FOSS,

  • no proprietary API is used for integrations.

I.e. I don't mind (to buy) proprietary software, that is an interchangeable tool, into which I am not locked-in, and I can seamlessly switch it with a different one if I wanted/needed.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@itsfoss which is not what #Microsoft is doing.

MS tries to lock people into their own proprietary formats.

People can't switch away from it easily - ramped up switching costs.

Pure monopolistic practices.

My touchscreen connected to Raspberry Pi 5 - used for Home Assistant control panel - shows a bright blue screen with notice about loss of HDMI signal, when X or Wayland blanks the screen on inactivity.

I managed to solve the issue by blanking the screen via DDC/CI instead of via X/Wayland's DPMS modes. I wrote a guide on how to do this:

@po3mah@mastodon.social avatar

'Reject all' hurt nobody, so use it generously.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@po3mah there's also "only necessary" option, that some sites use.

It is not "legitimate interest", but necessary use of cookies to make cart or login to work.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@po3mah if a session cookie can be tied to a person, then it's a PII and rules about processing consent apply.

"Can be tied" means: the session cookie contains user id, or the server stores a mapping from session cookie to an user id, or any other information is available and stored, that is good enough to make a correlation resulting in identifications of a person.

GDPR actually doesn't care about technical specifics, such as cookies, at all. Only about storing and processing of PII data.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@po3mah it depends, if the pixel can be used to identify you as a person directly or indirectly (transitive association, correlation,...), then the site needs to have your consent in order to be able to legally use it.

GDPR doesn't care about technical details. It's about privacy and personal data protection in general.

If the site stores and processes any data, that can be directly or indirectly associated with you as a person, then it needs your consent.

There are exceptions though,...

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@po3mah implicit consent is granted for data processing to carry out obvious action.

If you make an order, it's obvious that the site needs to pass private information further to deliver it to you.

It can't however use it for any else purpose, unless a separate (opt-in) consent is given.

It can't prevent you from making an order, if not accepting separate consent to sell your data. I.e. it can't force you to give extra consent, or you wouldn't be able to order.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@po3mah then there are legal needs, that don't need to have consent.

The state requires to keep invoices for 10 years. The site is obligated to do this by the law. Therefore, consent is not needed.

But, the site must delete invoices (private data) after 10 years had passed - i.e. no obligation to keep invoices anymore. Unless, you gave them consent to keep it longer.

Another exception is legitimate interest, i.e. fraud prevention.

But,... This legitimate interest is vaguely defined...

(But it seems to be working... Not sure how to interpret LQI - it was 66, now 53 and some Googling suggests anything under 100 is shit. The device and coordinator aren't far apart so no particular reason to think that it should be shit)

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@steve bad LQI is below 40, at least that's what I've once read.

kravemir,
@kravemir@hometech.social avatar

@steve Routers and a proper coordinator matters more.

I had a setup, where battery powered end devices with LQI over 150 were losing link if the number of routers was less than one per 6 end devices.

This was caused by Aotect Zi-Stick.

I switched to Sonoff ZBDongle-E, and I no longer have such issues.
