Playing Elementalism (Doom) and it's exquisite, it's cinematic, it's bloody brilliant, it's got to be absolutely legendary. I can't stop playing it and the design is so good literally every room is breathtaking. It is as fun to play as it is beautiful.

And it's hard enough to be completely enjoyable without becoming ruthlessly punishing. Suffice it to say that I'll be revisiting this instant classic time and time again.

This is what the open-source Doom engine is capable of... And luckily, since it is the GZDoom engine, it's coming with full native Linux support.

I wonder if the actual BGM will have more of that badass synth track too?

Is this a good deal for a gamegear system/games? Mostly the games, I'm interested in sonic, hedddy, and tempo. Nice to have the original console but I'll probably play them on my Analogue Pocket via adapter mostly.

Just finished Eviternity, another spectacular Doom mod. A full map pack with new enemies, themed stages and tons of challenges. This was very hard to finish but it was well worth it. Absolute must-play map pack without a doubt. Some of the hardest maps I've ever played were from this game.

Grab it and enjoy incredible level design and a whole custom soundtrack to go along with it.

Today we have a dead DMG GameBoy on the table. I never have worked on those. And immediately it is obvious that they are VERY different in design from the GBP and the GBC. There are two big PCBs.

Some time ago I posted that I planned on trying an impressive #Doom mod called Ashes 2063. I've finished the first episode and dove directly into the second. This series is absolutely brilliant. Visuals, level design, music; it's so good it might be hard to go back to regular Doom!

It's obvious its creators are passionate with painstaking attention to detail. Every retro FPS fan owes it to himself to play this one. Don't miss out.

#NES repair update. IT'S ALIVE!!

This console hasn't played a game in approximately 20 years. Caps looked good so a recap isn't needed yet. Still interest in neutering the TEN chip to ensure the pesky flashing reset issue can't happen but otherwise, should be fine with clean carts!

Mission accomplished!

#NES repair part 2. Still trying to save the original connector. Got a needle file kit and sanded the pins lightly out of necessity. This Zelda 1 cart sits inside and just enough of its contacts are exposed to do probes between the game and the slot.

Found the 18th pin didn't register which a little more filing resolved. Only one way to find out if this fixes the console...

Fun fact: the game battery is original and still yields 3.3V!

#Sega #GameGear repair notes. VA1 is shelved until I have some kynar wire to patch the 1 Button and a CleanAmp to replace the busted audio board.

Swapped out the power cable on the VA4 PCB to connect a VA1 power board and the screen has power but doesn't display. Audio and buttons work so that GG works but remains blind. Maybe the upcoming CleanScreen VA4 support can save this unit. #retrogaming

Two of the three pathways appear to be dead in the amp. Checking with RetroSix for advice to be certain but it's probably a lost cause and a CleanAmp will take this board's place.

Sadly the 1 button lost its trace to the ASIC rather than losing ground. Fixing ground is much easier. Patching to ASIC pin 34 will be a lot tougher; fix implementation to be determined. At least the repair is confirmed; gotta love schematics!!

#Sega #GameGear patient #6 is feeling much better today. Everything is working except 1 button isn't responding and the audio board only works with headphones. That's probably a failing amp like I've seen before or possibly a broken trace. 1 button I have fixed in the past as well and that's a quick trace repair for sure.

New #Sega #GameGear arrival. Good old VA1. Shell is stamped April 1993 making this 30 years old. First time seeing this many leaked caps on the same board. I've got a lot of cleaning to do. Here's hoping to minimal trace repair work. #retrogaming

Found this old #MegaDrive cart photo from a quick repair I did.

Somehow the two pins of the IC circled in the photo had a solder bridge. Took that out and instantly got the game working. It looked like a mistake when it was fabricated; nobody has played this cart until now...?!

I read about an N64 repair in a mod chat server where the modder resolved audio problems by recapping the console. Are we finally reaching the point that the more reliable retro consoles need recapping?

After fixing so many Game Gears, other consoles look quite easy to work on by comparison.

Working on my 5th #Sega #GameGear repair; first time seeing a VA4. Cap replacement's done. Power board is basically dead, and the plastic connector has a different shape...

Going to order a CleanJuice/battery set with a new connector cable and new shell soon. Hope to get this unit revived with those parts. Board's in really good shape, should be able to get it all running again with the original LCD.

Recapped VA1 Single ASIC
Majesco VA5
Recapped & fully upgraded VA1 Twin ASIC (TFT, clean amp audio, rechargeable batteries)

As amazing as the modern LCD is, it's nice to have the originals in excellent condition, too.

I did all the repairs and builds myself. Long live Sega!

This kit will replace the dead Dreamcast battery and put an end to that dreaded infernal beep every time it powers on! Plus retaining the date is a bonus.

This includes a resistor and diode to prevent the recharging and includes a solid state resettable fuse. A standard CR2032 has a substantially better life span than the rechargeable battery Sega used. The vertical coin mount makes future battery swaps a breeze.
