Thinking about bands that could fill the Sphere AND use it to its full potential, and I keep coming back to Tool being #1 on my wishlist.

@mrcompletely @chopaganda @jessay @drewphish from a demand POV, Pearl Jam would fit with sphere easily and perfectly. Every “current” PJ fan I know (I was a fan in the 90s) would happily pay $300 to see them in a regular arena nowadays.

Wednesday sunrise in Las Vegas. For , , and wooks, we've got decent weather. No crazy wind. Upper 80s today, mid 80s with clouds Thursday. It gets dark around 7:30 p.m. and we'll be in the 70s each evening and 60s late at night. Upper 80s Friday and low 90s this weekend will be great pool weather. Midday sun is strong enough in April that a sunburn can happen in 15 minutes; sun protection and hydration catch tourists (and locals) off guard every spring.

Sure, there were a few exciting moments and the make-up (quickie) sex of the last four songs. But overall a fairly uninspired set with fairly uninspired play. The good news is this is par for the course when the band tries to play a single-set show, and the next 3 nights are all standard two-setters.

@chopaganda @ry_storm @Bandino @vriphish76 I’ll have to give it spin #3 and see how it goes, but agree that the “hive mind” of AWOH was reserved for the last section. Whereas the CDT had it out the gate. Hive mind vs. good band interplay is something I’m trying to pay attention to this year, as carryover from sussing out last year’s JOTYs.

@chopaganda @ry_storm @Bandino @vriphish76 there’s a part of me that thinks that 4.0 #phish is more about the process of improvisation and the mechanisms of interplay than achieving a singular melodic result, which i find to be #1 fascinating and engaging, but #2 less ear-wormy than their earlier and simpler output. Feels like a necessary and natural extension for a band this deep into a career who’s not retreading their greatest hits, so to speak. 🤷

@chopaganda @ry_storm @osirispod very contentiously, yes! brian argued the jamming in both is thematically unified, ryan died a small death because he hates segues in brackets, and i sat back and listened to them argue about it for a long time. fwiw we did not include any segues where the jamming wasn't of a similar ethos (ala spac AWOH -> Simple).

@ry_storm @chopaganda @osirispod and msg ruby waves > plasma, too. i think the fact that the simple almost immediately enters jamming territory that's familiar from the tweezer makes a compelling argument to include it. and at the end of the day, the tweezer on its own would have edged out the dayton ruby waves as the standalone JOTY, for my money. but it's a hot take to include segues, understandably.

@chopaganda @ry_storm @osirispod i think the intent on me and brian's end is that there are instances, albeit rare, where the jamming is a literal connector between two discrete songs, and when you're considering best JOTY, it's worthwhile to think of those blurred lines as a full piece of music. it's hard to say where mike's ends and weekapaug begins on 12-7-95, and perhaps the LP tracking is misleading, as i'd say it's around 13:30 of the mike's. 1/

@Rosey @aburtch @phishjustjams @jdp11 @maxellxlii90 i retroactively went deep on 99 and 2000 a handful of years ago. my first few shows seen were back then, but i was still a n00b so i didn't have context for it. it was great to retroactively "explore my phish roots" with a couple decades more knowledge under my belts when i did finally go back to it.
