Now is the time to get your #NANOG90 talk submissions started.

The earlier you submit, the better chance you have at getting into the program since the PC works and votes on submissions as they come in. By the end of the CfP, we may already have a nearly full program. https://nanog.org/program/call-presentations/

I never knew her, but Adi Vital-Kaplouni was an #infosec colleague. Adi was a founding member of #ThreatSTOP's Israeli Security Research team, contributing high-quality analysis and comprehensive research for the past 7 years.

I've been putzing around with this textbook for several years now, explaining why the OSI Model is obsolete. It's not accurate practice, it's not theory, it's not even helpful, but people don't understand it well enough to understand what's wrong with it. In over 200 pages, I explain why it needs to be completely abandonned, except as a historical footnote.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iL0fYmMmariFoSvLd9U5nPVH1uFKC7bvVasUcYq78So/edit?usp=sharing

jtk,

@ErrataRob 200 pages too long. If you want to peruse through a number of common networking misconceptions, see this thread from a decade ago: https://mailman.nanog.org/pipermail/nanog/2012-February/045195.html

OSI makes an appearance of course.

The first person I recall succinctly deriding OSI was Rich Seifert. "It's a model, not a jail sentence." He would quickly flash it on the screen and move on. He was so full of great bits of wisdom.

Anyone have a good list of regular expression patterns used in rDNS by residential ISPs and VPS providers that are likely to be spammy? I can't remember where mine came from, but just noticed it has a poorly thought out line that was blocking relayN.ghost.io (namely "^.host[0-9.-].$").

jtk,

@lippard You might find something by reviewing the following sources:

Today the FCC will be voting on the Open Internet NPRM, which is an important step in restoring regulations that promote net neutrality. To learn more about my research on this topic, and how net neutrality violations are harmful, check out my talk here: https://youtu.be/fHDsBKle1lQ?feature=shared

jtk,

@proffnes Good stuff, thanks David.

I assume it might theoretically (wink, wink) be possible that someone could alter their traffic, including fake CA/certs at the ends, to control how their traffic will be handled?

Oh, and we passed 5 billion Sidekiq jobs today

jtk,

@jerry I don't know anything about sidekiq, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I have to ask. Why are there so many failed jobs? That number in comparison seems quite high.

Micfo’s Amir Golestan Sentenced to Five Years in Federal Prison for Defrauding #ARIN.

"The prosecutors proved that through this scheme, Golestan and Micfo obtained the rights to approximately 757,760 IP addresses, with a market value between $9,850,880.00 and $14,397,440.00."

reminded of this gem, also my first nice BMX bike that got me and later on to

jtk,

@jnazario wow, hadn't thought about redline in a long time. Had a blue mx-ii, but in those days the pk ripper was the exotic thing everyone drooled over.

@IODA Is the IODA website (and possibly all of the cc.gatech services) experiencing an outage or planned maintenance?

It sure would be nice if @radar mirrored the group's tweets more regularly, or at least put them somewhere else they control. Cites to #Twitter are just too unreliable now imo. #Cloudflare

jtk,

@dbelson @radar Thanks kindly! It was a minor criticism, but an important one to me. All the radar work is good stuff, I love it. Please relay that feedback as well.

jtk, (edited ) to Trivia

I miss @hal_pomeranz 's #CommandLine #Trivia challenges. Here is one inspired by a blog post I saw:

Write a command to extract the name of all active network interfaces.

jtk,

@hal_pomeranz One minor fix is to make sure the list of interfaces are only "active". That would show all interfaces no matter the state.

Weird how reports are claiming that there are millions of Exim mail servers on the Internet and they account for 56-57% of total mail servers, while other sources claim there are 602K mail servers of which 342K are Exim, and which seem to undercount Microsoft Exchange. It seems hard to believe that the majority would be Exim.

jtk,

@lippard I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I checked one of my postfix setups and main.cf is less than 30 lines. :-)
