British buses outside London are often branded specifically to a route or route group, with advertising on the bus giving info on routing and frequency. I haven't noticed this elsewhere in Europe. Where else is it done routinely?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@humantransit I’ve never understood why UK does that. It reduces the flexibility how to deploy a fleet, and do those stickers make the difference as to how many passengers take it? I always concluded it was the typical UK branding over substance. And I’m not aware of anywhere else doing it to the same extent.

Stanari

Metropolis. There’s some industry here. And 3 passengers get off and 4 get on.

Ljeb

This is a field next to a power station. No platform. But there is a little wooden step to help people up. 3 on, 1 off here

Dragalovci

2 off, 1 on. The station manager gives the train manager a paper. Whistle blows and on we go

Carriages are East German Halberstadt from the 1980s

Basic renovation and upkeep has been done. I’ve seen far worse

Meanwhile the stations come quicker than 4G 🙂

I’m noting and photographing them all, but I’ll post them when in Banja Luka

I’m also astounded at how reasonable the infra is here

Speeds are 70-90km/h. Welded track. Reasonably maintained

Compare that to - say - Subotica-Novi Sad which before they closed it to rebuild was like 35km/h and a disaster. This is much better

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Ok, spoke too soon - some temporary speed restrictions along the river just approaching Banja Luka. But nothing too serious. We arrived +10

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Right. Back to the stations 🙂

A hut grass platform but no passengers

Vijačani

A lady is watering bushes beside the line - there’s a restaurant beside the little station hut

jon,

Ukrina

6 board. 2 station staff. Important place!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Snjegotina

8 passengers get on. A beer crate is deployed to help passengers up from the non-existent platform

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Mlinska Rijeka

Houses in a field, 1 passenger on

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Jošavka

Neat houses. No idea how many get on because I’m on the wrong side of the train and train manager is snooping

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Bojići

More car parts than passengers here

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Čelinac

Brutalist station. Half a dozen off, 2 on

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Vrbanja

2 off. Nothing happening

Sadly the next stations are not Stresa, Arona and Milano Centrale (regular rail passengers will get this)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Incel

The train stops across a level crossing. Handy! Lots get off - it’s the edge of Banja Luka

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Banja Luka

End of this train. Amazing brutalist station. Nothing going on. My next train on from here goes in 5 hours. Thread will then resume 🙂

Background about the route I’ve just taken - Doboj-Banja Luka

The line was built in the 1950s, electrified in the 1970s or 1980s by the look of it. Wikipedia describes it as being in bad condition but I don’t agree - I’ve travelled on far worse! https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnstrecke_Doboj%E2%80%93Banja_Luka?wprov=sfti1

Here - as elsewhere in Bosnia - it’s the lousy service that’s the main problem!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Pffff. I had hope to use the enforced stop over in Banja Luka (5 hours between trains) to catch up with my work backlog. But now in my fourth café notionally with wifi I am yet so find any one with reasonable speeds…
